Support Our Students: Transform Lives at HBCUs

Dear Friends,

I am Dr. Stacey Patton, a dedicated educator, journalist, author, and fervent advocate for the education of young individuals, especially those enrolled in historically black colleges and universities.

In 2016, as a new journalism professor at Morgan State University, I quickly discovered that many of my students faced insurmountable challenges in affording necessary textbooks, a problem magnified by the soaring costs of higher education. The financial strain encompassing tuition, housing, meals, and books is a pervasive issue affecting students nationwide.

Many students rely on financial aid and grapple with food and housing insecurity, among other obstacles. These students are often the first in their families to pursue higher education, without the support of their families. Some juggle the responsibilities of parenthood and work alongside their studies, while others battle significant health challenges. Determined to support their success, I felt compelled to act.

Over the past 11 semesters, thanks to the incredible generosity of individuals like you across the country, we have raised nearly $200,000!

Our Program in Action

This semester, our goal is to raise $25,000 to support at least 100 students at both Morgan State and Howard University. Funds will be equally distributed between the two institutions. Regardless of their major, each student completes a form and provides a list of required textbooks. On a first-come, first-served basis, they can receive up to $250. This assistance also covers course software and access codes, hotspots for those facing internet connectivity challenges, and essential digital equipment for production courses.

Unfortunately, the demand is immense, and I often have to turn away students due to limited funds. Some students need assistance to acquire laptops, digital tools for their courses, or specialized software. The more funds we raise, the more students we can help.

Recipients have shared that this textbook fund has been transformative, significantly enhancing their academic performance and ability to complete their coursework. Every dollar you contribute, regardless of the amount, makes a tangible difference. Our students deeply appreciate your kindness.

By investing in these young individuals today, we are investing in a brighter future for all of us. Every single dollar you donate is much appreciated.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Dr. Stacey Patton
