The Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition

Donation protected
We're a team of students learning rocket engineering by bringing theory out of the classroom and onto the launchpad.

This year, CranSEDS is exploring new frontiers by making a debut entry into the Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC), run each year in New Mexico by the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association (ESRA). Cranfield university will be one of only four universities in UK entering the competition to launch a rocket to an altitude of 10,000ft (3000m). A challenge like this offers hands-on experience, applying members’ previously theory-only knowledge to the real world. What’s more, it will present the opportunity to broaden the team’s experience and skills beyond the scope of their traditional physics and aerospace backgrounds.

We are currently in a design and prototyping phase; the project involves two competitions, we started with the sole focus of entering the IREC competition in the States. However, we moved to include the British National Rocketry Championship as well as a stepping stone, to be able to develop our practical skills on a smaller scale with a smaller investment risk should something go wrong on our first attempt. Better to make mistakes and learn from them if less is at risk. The society has a good track record with this competition, having won it in 2015-16: https://ukseds.org/2016/11/winner-of-national-rocketry-competition-2015-16/

The IREC competition takes place in June in New Mexico at Virgin Galactic Spaceport America. Most of the cost of the project involves transporting and accommodating team members, also manufacturing and materials for the rocket.
We are also cooperating with schools by organising a STEM challenge for students to build payload on board the rocket. We are also considering more artistic opportunities, such as paint-job competitions, etc. and practical learning events with water bottle or stomp rockets and other low-powered engagement events to spark interest in rocketry and STEM at large.

Your support will allow us to take part in this exciting competition and help us to learn more about rocketry and practical engineering.
