Dear Friends, Neighbors and Extended family,
We know that many, many people are suffering through this unprecedented time...a crisis that has forced many into hardships we never could have imagined.
In the interest of preserving the health and well being of our community, Guilford County and the state of North Carolina issued a Shelter-in-Place order closing all nonessential businesses and organizations which included The Iron Hen cafe.
The closing of our restaurant's doors comes at a loss to the community. The Iron Hen Cafe has been a place of celebration, of gathering and for many in Greensboro a weekly if not daily respite from your lives.
The staff, our little family, who make up The Iron Hen Cafe represent more than 11 collective years of warmth, service and joy. From the front of the house staff -- our waiters and managers -- to the behind the scenes folk like our line cooks and dishwashers -- these individuals are the backbone of what we do and many have served you for the better half of a decade or more.
The impact on our staff and their families has been crushing as their rent, insurance, and the daily costs of living continue without income. At the time of this post, some of our staff have reached a critical point in their finances, the effects of which will be insurmountable.
While most of this struggle has been due in large part to the Covid-19 epidemic, our staff has also faced injustices from the restaurant’s owner Lee Comer. Comer has withheld our last paychecks from us, money that was given to us by YOU as tips. Money that is desperately needed in these troubling times. Some of our staff have not received checks since Feb 28th. What she has done is a disgrace to not only us but the community at large. She has broken our trust and yours. As a staff we will be pursuing the necessary steps to seek justice.
But, for now we are asking for your help. Please know that every single dollar matters and will be distributed in-full to our staff to help them through this difficult time.
We are grateful beyond words for your generosity and compassion, and we will see you all very soon. Stay safe and keep your spirits up.
