The Jamal Howlader Bursary at UofT Law
Donation protected
Jamal Akim Howlader (JD '20) passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on November 5th, 2020. He was a recent and proud graduate of the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law, having convocated this past June. Jamal was just two short months into his articling term with Rotfleisch & Samulovitch P.C.
Jamal touched everyone he came across with his comforting, calm and easy-going presence. His twin passions were his love for cooking and basketball. However, Jamal also had a brilliant mind and was a stellar student throughout his life. In high school, Jamal was placed and excelled in the Gifted program. He then proceeded to graduate with top marks from Western University's Medical Sciences program. Finally, he was admitted into and completed all of the rigorous requirements needed to graduate from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law.
Jamal's family and friends want his memory to honour and help future students at the Faculty of Law whom are similarly devoted to their studies. Accordingly, the proceeds of this fundraiser will help establish a bursary at the Faculty of Law in Jamal's name. Future recipients of this award will have a demonstrable need of financial assistance while also having showcased academic excellence.
Update:
The Faculty of Law has a $25,000 floor amount to establish the award which is payable in $5000 installments over 5 years. The Jamal Howlader Bursary will be established in perpetuity and support students at U of T Law with demonstrated financial need, who also embody the same qualities that made Jamal so special and loved. In recognition of the significance of this gift, the University will match the endowment payout 1:1 each year.
Thank you everyone for helping make Jamal's legacy last forever.
