BACKGROUND TO THE JAMESTOWN COMMUNITY PROJECT
Inspiring Young Achievers Network (IYAN) Africa has been promoting inclusiveness since November 2014.
In the last 9 years IYAN Africa has supported over 10,000 students, 600 school dropouts, 100 teen mothers, and 19 under-served communities in Ghana with educational materials, mentoring, health screening workshops, vocational and soft skill training to enable them develop employable skills and live sustainable lifestyles.
These projects have successfully fuelled the passion of our beneficiaries to pursue quality education, fostered the sense of volunteerism and empowered young people in rural communities to achieve their potential.
IYAN Africa is taking on its newest mandate in partnership with the Children’s Ministry of Doxa Praise Palace International, to address the educational and social challenges faced by children and young people at Jamestown in Accra, Ghana. A needs-based assessment was conducted to improve the young lives of this underserved community, and it led to a collaboration with Wisdom Boxing Gym, Jamestown -Accra, which serves as a central convening point for most of the youth of Jamestown. Coach Ofori Asare, (head coach for the Black Bombers) who is the founder of Wisdom Boxing Gym plays an instrumental role among the youth within the community, which aligns with our mandate of changing, nurturing and transforming the African Youth to achieve their Goals. Coach Asare in his bid to transform the lives of the youth, trains and mentors school dropouts in his boxing gym to keep them off the streets while instilling discipline and a sense of purpose and direction in them.
Freda Nyame- Founder/Executive Director - "My interactions with some teenage mothers and other students from the community confirmed that many of them had dropped out of school because their families couldn't afford their education or didn't think it was necessary for their wards to further their education. Most of the teachers had given up on some of the students who could neither spell nor write in English and had to be taught in the local dialect to understand lessons.
Learning that more than 70 million children worldwide have no access to basic education, it became obvious that not everyone was guaranteed the right to education, and the situation in Jamestown being just one example. This knowledge made me question what I could do because the world I want to see is one where quality education is inclusive for all."
IYAN Africa and the Children’s Ministry of Doxa Praise Palace International, in collaboration with Wisdom Boxing Gym have launched an educational initiative dubbed The Jamestown Community Project to create sustainable solutions for the community.
The Jamestown Community Project has three key objectives:
1. Establish a Reading Centre with an active reading club to sustain a healthy reading culture, through monthly reading competitions and literacy-focused events.
2. Provide reproductive health and hygiene focused education to adolescent girls and boys. This is aimed at helping them unlearn and relearn; addressing myths versus facts.
3. Conduct a hands-on workshop for unemployed youth, including teen mothers and young adults. This comprises of vocational and technical training to create a revenue generating avenue for the target group.
