The Little Free Plant Powered Pantry!

We're John and Marla and we've been building compassionate communities for more than 25 years through our website Vegan Street and other projects. Now we are building a Little Free Pantry that will be providing shelf-stable and chilled or frozen foods for anyone who wants or needs it. But it's more than that. Since our goal is to grow a healthier, more compassionate and more sustainable world, everything we offer will be plant-based (vegan). We're calling it the Little Free Plant Powered Pantry (LFPPP) and we're very excited! We decided to create this fundraiser because our first little announcement brought out so many kind people who asked how they can contribute.

Our Lunch and Launch party to debut the LFPPP is Saturday, May 27 from noon until 4:00 and we'd love to have you join us if you're in the Chicago area. Please RSVP if you can! Details are on the event page.

The main box is a cheerful Mid-Century Modern children's play range that we found online, and I (John) am building an old-fashioned icebox beneath it for fresh produce and other cold items. This will all be firmly planted into the ground in our front yard in Berwyn, Illinois (just outside the Chicago city limits).

Part of our larger vision is to help offer instruction, marketing materials and support to anyone who wants to set up their own Little Free Plant Powered Pantry in their own neighborhood! We have much of the lumber and other building materials and we can do all the construction ourselves, but we need good cabinet hardware (handles and hinges, insulation for the icebox (the icebox will be kept cool by ice-filled cake pans that will be switched out every day or as needed). We also want to add permanent professionately printed graphics and create a small flyer or postcard to hand out. More than this, we want to always have a good stock of healthy, mostly non-perishable foods so that visitors won't leave empty-handed.

We have a simple website that we will keep updated as it goes along.

We think this is a wonderful tool for building community, spreading the vegan message, and participate in mutual aid. Please join us in making the Little Free Plant Powered Pantry a reality because it takes a village and everyone deserves good food.
