Preserve Rural Las Vegas - Save Lone Mountain!
Donation protected
We started Preserve Rural Las Vegas to preserve our rural way of life in the Lone Mountain Area. This group was formed in direct response to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints proposed 70,194 square feet, 216-foot-tall temple, 15,982 square foot meeting house, and 1,690 square foot grounds building on 19.8 acres. Along with this project will come heavy traffic, bright building lighting, 514 parking spaces, streetlights, flooding onto downhill properties, curb, gutter, sidewalks - basically everything that we have fought against for decades in the area!!
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is aiming to rezone the property from U-DR (Undeveloped, Desert Rural Residential) to C-V (Civic). The parcel is within the Interlocal Agreement area, which offers protection against commercial and industrial uses. Because the Interlocal is silent with regard to houses of worship, churches are permitted to be built within the Interlocal area. HOWEVER, C-V zoning did NOT allow a church of any denomination to build at this magnitude. Houses of worship could not be built on parcels larger than 5 acres. This is where things get interesting...
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints purchased the property in July 2022. The City of Las Vegas JUST amended C-V zoning on March 20, 2024 with Bill 2024-8 to allow churches to be built on parcels of land larger than 5 acres. This bill was sponsored by the Ward 4 (where the temple is located) councilwoman, Francis Allen-Palenske. The most unfortunate thing of all of this is that the changes to the C-V code will affect everyone in Las Vegas.
The Lone Mountain area is famous in Las Vegas as a wonderful area for residents to get away from it all. It is an area that is sacred to not only those who live in the area, but for those who live all over the city. The Lone Mountain trail system, equestrian arena, and parks are an escape for everyone to get away from the hustle and bustle of the busy city that we live in. Not only that, but Clark County also spent millions of dollars in improvements to create a sanctuary for residents across the valley. A brightly lit building as tall as Durango Casino right in the middle of this tranquility will surely ruin what draws so many to this beautiful area.
Funds raised for this endeavor will be used for flyers, printing expenses, postcards, signage of all kinds, website establishment, advertising, domain registration, banners, postage, and possibly lobbyists and legal expenses. This list is not all inclusive as there could possibly be different expenses that are incurred along the way that need to be paid. All funds will be used to fight this development and not for anything else! We intend to fight this to the fullest extent, and we need everyone's help!
Thank you for your generosity!
