the most compassionate doctor I know

I am reaching out to you with an urgent plea for help on behalf of a remarkable individual, Dr. Maria Alexandra Sandoval (“Alex”). I have had the privilege of knowing Alex as a compassionate doctor, a tireless advocate, and an inspiring individual who has overcome extraordinary challenges to pursue her dream of becoming a healer.

Dr. Sandoval's journey is one of resilience and determination. As an immigrant, a first-generation college graduate, and a Latina, she defied the odds by completing medical school and residency despite a learning disability and with little family support. Throughout the years that I have known her, Alex has been a steadfast advocate for the underserved: tirelessly fighting for the rights of patients who are poor, of color, and marginalized in our community.

Despite successfully completing a learning plan during residency to address professionalism concerns, the medical board placed restrictions on her license. These restrictions unfortunately made finding employment almost impossible, and she is consequently at risk of having her license revoked. As a result, Alex is also facing homelessness due to her lack of employment and family support.

I worked side by side with Alex during residency. I've witnessed her exceptional medical skill firsthand, as she has gone above and beyond to diagnose and advocate for patients who were otherwise overlooked. She has a profound ability to elevate the spirits of suffering patients: How often have I walked by a patient’s room and found Alex dancing with a patient or playing a song on her phone for them?! How often have I heard the ring of their laughter and joy due to Alex’s spirit and warmth?! She consistently dedicates time and energy to her patients which is a testament to the kind of doctor we need in our ranks.

Now, I am reaching out to you, asking for your support in helping Alex fight for her present and future. She is not just a doctor but a single mother, working in an alternative field to provide for her child while the court proceedings unfold. Her legal fees have been estimated at $60,000 to start: a significant burden for someone already facing housing instability.

Your contribution will go directly towards her legal fees ensuring that she can continue her medical journey and fight for the right to care for patients who need her expertise, her warmth, her spirit and her advocacy.
