The Mounds: National Monument/Park!

Tax deductible
BECOME a part of HISTORY:
Help preserve, elevate, and enhance the largest earthen mound in the country and it's site.
In all of North America, four archaeological complexes stand out as the greatest achievements in the ancient history of our continent – Poverty Point (Louisiana), Ohio Hopewell (Ohio), Chaco Canyon (New Mexico) and Cahokia Mounds.

The Mounds – America’s First Cities initiative is in the process elevating the national designation of Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site
and thematically-connected mound complexes deemed significant and in public ownership as a non-contiguous National Monument/Historical Park in a collaborative partnership with IHPA.

WHERE: Greater St Louis and Illinois Metro East area, including Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site and the National Stockyards in East St. Louis/Fairmont City, Sugarloaf Mound in St. Louis, Pulcher Mound Group in Dupo, IL. There are 563 mounds we have mapped in the region. Currently, Cahokia Mounds, located near Collinsville and the only mounds that represent the Mississippian culture holistically and uniquely, is a State Historic Site run by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.  It is also a National Historic Landmark and a United Nations World Heritage Site. Hidden gems in our own backyard, the mounds are a significant and unsurpassed example of its time period.

WHY change our amount? This fundraising campaign* is representing two years to match our challenge grant by the Grand Victoria Foundation.  We made our first year match. We are on to our second! We have raised the $75,000 of the first year’s goal (update: The Crown Family Foundation sent a private donation that pushed us over the limit!!! The WIlliam Kerr foundation sent us $10,000 to math their donation of last year. THANK YOU!!!!

FIRST GOAL MILESTONE: MET!!!!!!!!!!

SECOND GOAL MILESTONE:
They will give another $25,000 to match $75,000 raised by us.  Join us and help us complete our second second year challenge.
That would be FANTASTIC!

These EXACT dollars will provide assistance for community outreach and education for our region, as well as ongoing outreach and inclusion to the Nations and Tribes who harken to Cahokia as their heritage. This is a tremendous opportunity to continue the healing of our national scars – a story of honoring and including those whose lineage is linked to our fertile grounds. It will connect today’s contemporary communities and cultures to the thriving trails and footprints of the ancient cities of the American Bottom and the Mississippi River.

COMPLETED: The Mounds Feasibility Study mapped over 563 mounds, collected800 surveys and 0ver 700 individual letters of support, and received letter from legislators, including the request from Senator Durbin for National Park Service to complete a reconnaissance study (being conducted now). Outstanding Local Government Achievement Award by East West Gateway Council was presented to The Mounds - America's First Cities Project for the tremendous work of the counties in Illinois and City of St Louis. The award was presented on November 14, 2014

HELP US meet our match! Every dollar counts and goes directly to the project housed at HeartLands Conservancy for achieving the national designation to preserve, protect, and enhance our region’s cultural heritage and the contribution to trade, agriculture and settlement across the continent.

PLEASE view and LIKE The Mounds Project Facebook:  www.facebook.com/TheMounds
