We are The Name Matters.
qathayisht-qa t'hah yeesht, a group of people coming together for a purpose.
In early June 2021, we were founded following a painful social media response to a name change proposal for what is currently known as Powell River. In light of the division made apparent within our collaborative communities, we formed to carry out research, education, and awareness initiatives to advocate for more respectful and inclusive place names that reflect both the oral history of these lands and the present-day collaborative communities here.
Our mandate is to educate, raise awareness, and elevate Indigenous voices with compassion and understanding.
As a community member with a vested interest in seeing our collaborative communities thrive with mutual respect, honour, and dignity, we're reaching out to you for support to help our team:
a) produce and distribute educational/campaign materials,
b) host events,
c) and contribute to the costs associated with seeing the name change become a reality.
100% of the funds raised are to be used under one of the three areas listed above. We are a team of volunteers, and no part of the funds raised will be used for salary purposes.
The funds raised for The Name Matters Committee will be managed by the Tla'amin Nation and are subject to the Tla'amin Administration and Finance Law. Tla’amin Nation is a qualified donee, and as such, can provide official donation receipts for income tax purposes for donations greater than $20. Please get in touch with us at payment@tn-bc.ca if you would like to receive a donation receipt.

From all of us,
we thank you.
