If you live locally, you may recognise the ever - smiling face of Nathan 'Truesy' Trueman from serving you your morning coffee at the Starbucks drive-thru, or from dominating the Portishead Town 1st Team football pitch on a Saturday afternoon whilst donning his trademark head band!
Described as the 'Rolls Royce' of young footballer's by his Manager's at PTFC, at just 20 years old he leads the team as Captain due to his passion, natural talent, versatility and intellect, combined with his ability to mentor and inspire the rest of the team!
The middle son of 3 boys to single mum Kim, Nathan is Portishead born & bred and started playing for PTFC at just 6 years old! His talent was clear even at such a young age, so he was soon snapped up by Bristol Rovers where he trained and played before moving on to League Two club Forrest Green Rovers, enjoying two full U18's seasons before returning back to his roots at Portishead Town.
In September 2020 Nathan was living his life as normal; playing football, working, spending time with his family and beautiful girlfriend Ella and looking forward to his bright future ahead, when suddenly his world was turned upside down with the discovery of a lump under his right arm.
The weeks that followed were a whirlwind of uncertainty and anxiety for Nathan and his family with extensive doctor and hospital appointments, tests and scans until he finally received the shocking and unfathomable diagnosis in December 2020 that at the age of 20, he had a rare, large and incredibly aggressive (grade 4) tumor growing within the tissue of his right shoulder (known as a synovial sarcoma), which would require intensive chemotherapy followed by surgery and radiotherapy.
Naturally this news was devastating, but Nathan and his family choose to focus on the positives; the lump was discovered and diagnosed quickly due to Nathan being proactive and vigilant. This in turn meant that the treatment could start quickly and the hopeful news is that the type of cancer Nathan has generally responds well to chemotherapy.
So over the coming weeks and months, brave Nathan will undergo intensive intravenous chemotherapy which will involve him being hooked up to the life - saving drugs he needs for up to 3 days at a time (!) in the hope that the tumor will reduce in size enough for a specialist shoulder surgeon to be able to remove what remains. This will then be followed by a final blast of radiotherapy to ensure the cancer is gone for good!
And all of this amidst a global pandemic which means no visitors during hospital treatment or recovery, the entire Trueman household shielding/locked - down and a heightened risk of covid19 related complications.....
Due to the nature of Nathan's cancer, treatment and the recovery time required, he will be unable to work for many months to come. Whilst his employer has generously offered to pay his salary for 3 months which he appreciates greatly, after this point Nathan will have no income and the unnecessary worry of how to meet the payments on his car, phone etc.
We are therefore setting up this #gofundme page to raise enough money to cover Nathan's relatively minimal outgoings whilst also striving to smash the optimistic but very achievable goal of £50, 000 to support both Sarcoma UK https://sarcoma.org.uk/ and the Teenage Cancer Trust https://www.teenagecancertrust.org/ which Nathan has personally chosen.
Throughout 2021, Nathan's family, friends, colleagues and team mates will be taking part in various challenges and initiatives in order to get to the £50,000 goal - this page will be updated regularly with planned events, £££ progress and how you can support Nathan, his family and his chosen charities. We will also keep you updated with Nathan's treatment journey every step of the way...
So please, please get involved and help in any way that you can!
Whilst Nathan is giving his treatment everything he's got and focusing on getting better, let's dedicate some of our spare time, positive thoughts and of course ££cash to supporting Nathan and everyone who is working tremendously hard to make him and thousands of other young cancer sufferer's throughout the UK cancer free.
