The Neshoma Project

Donation protected
All over Poland there are non-Jews preserving Jewish memory in many different ways, through scholarship, teaching, guiding people to their ancestral towns, cleaning up cemeteries, and telling stories about the Polish Jews, 90% of whom were murdered during World War II. I call these dedicated souls Rescuers of Memory.

Since 2018 I have been working on an online video archive: "The Neshoma Project: Conversations with Poles Rescuing Jewish Memory" to immortalize the voices of the Rescuers of Memory who are filling the empty spaces in Poland with Jewish stories and Jewish memory.

Phase I of the project was generously supported by a Wellesley College Mary Elvira Stevens Fellowship in 2018. With that grant I was able to interview 27 people in 25 interviews. Phase II was generously supported by the US Embassy in Warsaw.  With the second grant I was able to add 19 more voices to the collection. Now it's your turn.

In order to continue this labor of love I need your help. There is more translation, editing and work on the website to be done. I would like all videos to be accessible to both Polish and English speakers. This means engaging translators and adding subtitles to the full-length English films (the Polish ones all will have subtitles). It means upkeep of the website. And it means making The Neshoma Project into a non-profit. But all this takes money. You can help with your donation of any amount.

Donations of any amount are amount are welcome. All donors will be thanked on the website. Here are some suggested amounts:

Many people view Poland as a cemetery. Jews of Polish descent may feel detached from the place where their ancestors came from; I felt that way before traveling to Poland in 2005. That feeling is understandable given the vast pain and loss experienced by Jews in Poland. Bringing people of all backgrounds closer to each other through their remembrance work, The Rescuers of Memory are healing historical wounds.  Visit www.neshomaproject.org to meet these extraordinary human beings.
