What is fragmentation in brain and behavioral healthcare?
Fragmentation in brain and behavioral healthcare is the separation of brain sciences such as Neurology from behavioral sciences such as Psychiatry and Psychology. When these fields are de-fragmented, people of all ages, payors with different standards, and providers of various fields collectively enjoy much higher quality, much lower cost, and many new options for preventative as well as curative care.
The neuro well FREE is a Not-for-Profit Corporation dedicated to radically transforming quality in behavioral healthcare for all people through Re-Unification of Neurology and Psychiatry. In 2017, Dr. Alon Seifan, a board-certified behavioral neurologist, founded the neuro well FREE because re-unification of Neurology and Psychiatry is the simple secret to fixing the quality crisis in behavioral healthcare.
Neurology and Psychiatry specialties were originally learned as one field. Over time, as some conditions became biologically understandable (Neurology), others remained abstract (Psychiatry & Psychology). Since treatment approaches became different, "medical" healthcare became distinguished from "behavioral" healthcare. Healthcare providers became specialized in one field or the other. Today, behavioral health providers don't know how to treat the whole brain one visit at a time because they were never trained to do so.
This tragic historical fragmentation between Neurology, Psychiatry and related fields has had unintended, severe and prolonged effects on access and quality in brain care. People get the lowest quality of care when it comes to their brain. Fragmentation has the most severe impact on those in our community who are the most disabled and disadvantaged. Incapacitated patients are often expected to seek evaluation from a psychologist, psychiatrist, neurologist and/or their primary care physician. Patients rarely, if ever, even have a chance to improve completely simply due to the logistical challenges presented by fragmentation. Bad behavioral healthcare is crippling. Behavioral health disorders will be the number one cause of disability worldwide as of 2020.
Good behavioral healthcare could change the world. Patients, the public, insurance payers, and doctors from all specialties can benefit from better brain care. Reunification yields better brain care, at lower cost. Reunification not only clinical advances, but also scientific discoveries. Importantly, higher quality in behavioral healthcare could transform quality in our medical clinics and hospitals because body health depends on brain health.
