The New Story Ride - Climate adventurism on wheels

The world needs a new story, one where we smile, and I want your help to tell it.
THE NEW STORY RIDE
#NewStoryRide
On 24th November 2019 I set off on the New Story Ride, to meet the people creating that new story of how we can prosper into the 21st century.
I am finding and telling this story through a low budget, low (environmental) impact, ‘climate adventurism’ journey, travelling solo and unsupported across Europe and Asia by bike, wild camping, starting in the winter.
The Ride is inspired by and interacts with Rosie Watson's incredible New Story Run which began in the Lake District, UK on 17th August 2019. These twinned solo adventures will intertwine as we meet and tell the stories of the diverse people creating the new ways of life and new systems we need to make a better world and combat the climate and ecological crisis. I'll be telling my part of the story on the New Story Ride website: NewStoryRide.WordPress.com
HELP CREATE THE NEW STORY
The New Story Ride (and Run) needs you to help tell the new story the world needs. There's lots of ways you can help, most of all by telling people the story!
I am very grateful for any offers of help like connecting me with people + projects on route, warm meals, cups of tea, offers of kit, places to rest, even yoga studios that might want a guest teacher (I'm a yoga teacher)!
I'm raising money here to help cover the (minimal) day to day costs for the first year: primarily food and stopping in cafes to recharge equipment sometimes.
You can chip in like an absolute hero. Maybe for some literal chips. No amount too big (or small!). The expedition will be at least a year long, if I find the financial support (currently I am self-funded). I will be living the values of the New Story (see further down) whilst existing on a very tight budget target £50 / €60 per week (£2600 / €3120).
You could help with:
- 1.50 would be breakfast porridge for a week or a pot of Vaseline - I've heard chafing can become an issue on long long rides!
- 2 would cover things to actually go on the porridge, or a big portion of chips, because sometimes chips are the only answer.
- 2.50 would get me a warming hot drink, or something cooling when it's ridiculous temperatures.
- 5 would cover all of my essential camping food for at least 1 day.
- 5-10 would treat me to a proper hot lunch or dinner full of veggies and vitamins on a really hard day.
- 10-20 would get me a night in a hostel or fancy campsite with showers & let me do my laundry (My wardrobe is going to be v. limited, and washing is a luxury!)
- 20-40 would get me an extra long rest in a proper bed out of the cold, or my essential camping food for a week!
THE NEW STORY RIDER
I'm Mike Elm, a fan of journeys by bike, train and just the occasional bus or boat. I've been doing all my adventuring since 2015 without taking a flight.
The idea of a ride like this has been circulating in my mind for years. Now, I've been inspired by the boldness of Rosie's New Story Run.
I've realised you've just got to do things and when you see something great, don't be too proud to join in with it because someone else started it.
In creating the world's new story everyone's going to have to get better at practicing humility and championing great leadership.
For the past 6 years I've dedicated myself to being part of the movements making the world a better place. I'm a founder of the 2050 Climate Group, one of Al Gore's Climate Reality Leaders and was shortlisted for a WWF Earth Hour Hero.
The New Story Ride combines my excitement for finding solutions to the climate crisis, telling stories, being inspired by the amazing people that exist everywhere, and exploring the world without it costing the earth. And who knows if I'm lucky maybe there'll also be some good (or bad) puns, ping pong tables and cold water for swimming along the way.
LIVING THE NEW STORY VALUES
I will be living the values of the New Story
- Using pre-loved or borrowed kit as far as possible to show you don't always need new stuff, you need well made stuff well maintained and, well...mended! And where necessary sourcing new kit from companies with strong environmental credentials.
- I am wild camping as much as possible as a low impact way of travelling, and taking environmental credentials into account when choosing places to stay for rest days.
- Eating a simple and environmentally responsible vegetarian, local diet as much as possible!
It's part excitement and part fear that lies ahead. How it will happen, where it will go, is all part of the story.
Thank you so much for being part of it, it's going to be quite a ride.
Mike
