The Nick Machin Prize
Donation protected
Nick Machin was a much-loved journalist who worked tirelessly in his role as a news editor at the South Wales Echo and at Media Wales to help young journalists.
Since losing Nick to a brain tumour in August 2018, a number of his friends and colleagues have been discussing how fitting it would be to launch an award in his memory to recognise the best young journalists in Wales and their work.
This is the product of those discussions.
The Nick Machin Prize lanches today (January 10, 2019), on what would have been his 50th birthday. We're currently in discussion with a number of partners to secure funding that will guarantee the awards can run for a minimum of five years.
Since discussions about the prize started, a number of Nick's friends have asked about whether they would be able to donate to the award fund. There is absolute no pressure on anyone to do so - we're confident that we'll attract enough money to run for at least five years - but if anyone would like to donate in memory of Nick, this page has been set up to let you do that.
As for the awards themselves, we're planning to open for nominations in May, with the first awards ceremony likely to take place in October.
As well as funding, we're on the lookout for judges and friends of Nick interested in joining the steering group, which currently consists of Paul Rowland (editor-in-chief of Media Wales), Alastair Milburn (managing director of Effective Communication and former editor of the South Wales Echo) and Phil Nifield (former chief reporter of the South Wales Echo). If you're interested in getting involved in either capacity, or want more information, please get in touch.
