On Saturday, March 24th, our boys were playing golf in our backyard when Rylan got a little too close to his brothers swing. Sawyer swung full force and hit Rylan over his left temple on accident. We rushed him to the ER where we thought he would just need stitches.
At first examination the ER doctor thought it was just a concussion and would need a few stitches but decided to go with her gut feeling and have a CT scan done to be overly cautious. Her gut instinct SAVED his life.
The CT showed a depressed skull fracture with bone fragments in his brain. The Neurosurgeon noticed that there was cerebrospinal fluid oozing from the laceration. He explained that it was necessary to do a crainiotomy and scheduled it for early the next morning.
Once surgery started, they found that a bone fragment had cut an artery and an epidural hematoma had formed, meaning that if we had gone home and not had the surgery, Rylan wouldn't have made it.
A few hours after surgery, Rylan had a seizure. He's been placed on medication to prevent having more. We don't know yet, but its possible he could struggle with them longterm.
After 4 days in the PICU, we are finally home and on the road to recovery. It's possible that he may need another surgery in his future to reconstruct the skull as it grows.
We want to thank you all for your prayers, love and support. We couldn't have done this without you.
