This fund has been set up on behalf of my cousin, Monica Pham, and her family: Husband, Vince, and their three beautiful children Niko, Nixon and Naylana as they focus on Monica’s health and ongoing treatment for Stage 4 Non Small Cell ALK Positive Lung Cancer.
Diagnosis:
In the midst of the COVID pandemic, Monica and family were dealt with the sudden and shocking news which would flip their lives upside down during this already extremely difficult year.
During late June, Monica had been experiencing some difficulty breathing and pain in her chest which prompted a visit to the clinic. While at the clinic, doctors ran imaging tests and discovered the presence of a large mass in her chest. Follow up scans showed the presence of smaller tumors that had rapidly spread to other areas of her body - indicating a diagnosis of metastatic cancer.
As of late August, Monica has gone through several tough rounds of chemotherapy. Following a second opinion with a thoracic oncologist from Stanford Hospital, it was discovered that there is a presence of ALK (Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase) mutation found in Monica’s cancer. There is no known cause and no cure for this rare form of lung cancer, that is caused by a genetic mutation of the ALK gene. It is only treatable (extended life).
Following this finding, doctors have since discontinued IV chemo treatment and begun prescribing Monica with a targeted therapy chemo drug.
But, with every pill comes a cost. With every appointment, procedure, and treatment comes a cost. A cost and time needed that no family can ever be prepared for.
How we will help:
As Monica has not been employed in the last year and with her health condition and diagnosis, Vince needs to fully dedicate his time and focus on the care of Monica and their children. Because of this, he is unable to take on any new consulting work. Without income generation, the high cost of insurance premiums and mounting medical bills has created an extreme hardship for their family.
Our goal is to provide financial support and assistance to the Phams so that they can focus solely on Monica’s health, her treatment and the kids. Donations and proceeds for this ongoing fund will be immediately utilized to help pay for ongoing medical costs for treatment and essential expenses.
For those of you who are fortunate to know Monica, know that she is an incredibly strong and resilient individual and super mom, yet this terminal cancer has left Monica with little energy and strength to be able to care for her young sons.
If you’ve ever met the Pham family, you know that they are passionate about serving at their home church, outreach in the local community and ready to help those in need. They have been such a blessing to others so this is our opportunity to give back to them.
