The Rebel Market
Tax deductible
We are asking for your help in building the Rebel Market, Philadelphia's first a youth-powered, fresh food-filled corner store. To accomplish this big goal, the Rebel Ventures crew is joining forces with Siddiq Moore of Siddiq's Real Fruit Water Ice and Tom McCusker of Honest Tom's Plant-Based Taco Shop to form the dream team of healthy deliciousness.
As a finalist team in the Full City Challenge, we have 7 DAYS to raise money for the Market, and after that time the team with the most raised will earn an additional $2500 match grant.
Our idea for a youth-powered healthy store started when Zanayja, 10th grader at Academy at Palumbo and Rebel entrepreneur, asked this question during our crew meeting one week,
“Why can I buy four bags of chips at the corner store for $1 but one smoothie at the supermarket costs $4?”
Said another way, why is it so hard for kids to find healthy, affordable, convenient, tasty food in so many parts of Philadelphia? Walk a few blocks in any direction in our city and you will find corner stores and take-outs filled with salty, sugary, and fatty foods. The options are tasty and relatively cheap, and for many kids are a significant part of their diet. It can be almost impossible for kids to find affordable smoothies, healthy parfaits, fruit salads, and whole-grain snacks.
With your support, we will build a healthy snack store where young people are in control of what's on the menu and earn money by running the business. Our primary goal is not profit, but instead providing affordable, nutritious foods to our target customers (kids in Philadelphia). We will sell fresh produce, sliced ‘grab and go’ produce, parfaits, smoothies, Rebel Crumbles, and other healthy snacks, many priced at $1 or less. On the savory side, our crew will design a simple menu featuring healthy, delicious foods we want to eat like tasty salads, platters, and stir-frys. When determining what to sell, we will use a framework that considers affordability, nutritiousness, deliciousness, simplicity, seasonality, geography, and mission-alignment. 100% of our products will be healthy deliciousness.
We will hire one full-time staff person to operate the business, with high school students working part-time after school and on the weekends. Our high school Rebel Market crew will also work offsite on menu design, marketing, accounting, and impact evaluation.
A few years ago we had the idea of youth-created school food, something never done before. Since 2017, more than a million Rebel Crumbles have been served to kids throughout Philadelphia.
Now is the time for a youth-powered corner store. The Market is a new project for Rebel, and so we are raising money to pay staff, lease space, and purchase equipment. We are bringing together a team of advisors and a community of supporters to make our vision a reality. We are asking you to join us in this mission.
