The Road to Home for Everhart Village

Join Chico Housing Action Team in making a difference in Chico! We're asking for your support for Everhart Village, an innovative shelter project in collaboration with Butte County Behavioral Health (BCBH) and Butte County Department of Employment and Social Services. Everhart Village will provide sleeping cabins and social services for around 20 to 24 clients of BCBH who do not have stable housing. CHAT will oversee the day-to-day operations and CHAT case managers will meet often with the residents to work on housing goals, while BCBH will provide clinician services, care management and assist residents with their mental wellness goals.
Specifically, we’re raising funds to build the road into the village. This is completely undeveloped land so it needs extensive work before the road can be put in with grading and earthwork, then the road needs pads and finally the paving. The road into the property will be about 200 feet long, with a required “hammerhead” turnout so emergency vehicles can turn around. This road is VITAL for us to be able to move the sleeping cabins into the village. We estimate the total costs of this road will come to around $100,000 for the 200 foot total, or around $500/foot.
- Earthwork/Grading: $ 53,000
- Aggregate Paving: $ 28,000
- Aggregate Pads: $ 16,000
Butte County is currently in need of solutions for our unhoused population. The Butte County Continuum of Care’s 2019 Point-In-Time (PIT) count identified 891 unsheltered people, which was 16% higher than the previous count done in 2017, and it’s almost certainly grown since then. The survey reported that 22% of these individuals reported suffering from a serious mental illness, which shows that there is a significant need for housing and treatment for this population within our community.

About Chico Housing Action Team (CHAT):
CHAT'S mission is to ensure that everyone in our community has access to housing they can afford. CHAT started in 2013 when a group of Chico residents wanted to find solutions to providing housing for homeless folks. They started by master-leasing one house, then another, and now, thanks to our generous supporters, there are more than 170 residents who have affordable housing through CHAT in over 60 residences throughout Chico.
We originally started with an emergency winter shelter known as Safe Space, now operated by its own nonprofit organization. We also operate a food pantry and furniture warehouse, as well as operating six different programs which permanently house over 180 individuals. Our master leasing program has received praise from local law enforcement, the city council, and the local business association. CHAT has built partnerships with True North Housing Alliance and BCBH to find housing solutions, and we believe we have the expertise, the experience, and the community support needed to successfully operate Everhart Village and provide quality services for this population.
