The Roger J Skinner Memorial Dog Park
Donation protected
It’s taken more than a decade, but an area is being cleared and the dog park Ed View has been trying to establish in Herkimer County is finally starting to take shape.
And the new park on Marginal Road in Herkimer will be known as the Roger Skinner Memorial Dog Park. Skinner, a Whitesboro resident, local business owner and a longtime member of the Mohawk Valley Rotary Club, which is sponsoring the park, died March 9.
“I’ve been working on this for 11 years,” said View. “I was ready to give up on the idea, but Roger said, ‘No, you can’t give up.’ He convinced me to keep going.”
It appeared the idea of the park was going to die, said Mohawk Valley Rotary Club President Dr. Bob DeCarlo, “but Ed and Roger brought it back to life.”
The Skinner family said in a statement: “He’d be so honored and touched with the privilege of having his name on this park. This project was near and dear to his heart for a very long time. He’d have a tear in his eye and a smile on his face.”
View is still looking to raise another $5,000 for the project, which will include a 200- by 40-foot area for large dogs and an adjacent 165- by 25-foot area for small dogs. There will be no grass, he said. The areas will be fenced and covered with milling and stone dust.
This park is sponsored by the Mohawk Valley Rotary Club and donations will go directly to the building and upkeep of the park.
