The Rooted in Melanin Initiative New Growth Fund

Donation protected
We are the Rooted in Melanin Initiative! What began as a collective interest in having a community garden in Austin for Black and Brown individuals has now become an organization that seeks to educate and facilitate safe spaces for all BIPOC to learn about edible gardening and wellness.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began we have seen a great need in our community to provide accessible options for BIPOC to learn how to grow their own food and preserve their health. Since March 2020 we have had virtual workshops, small-group workdays (with PPE), and distributed seeds and transplants.

As we await our official non-profit status approval we continue to work to bridge the gap between food injustice and the BIPOC community in the Austin-area by caring for plots in BIPOC owned spaces and businesses. We also are creating a community garden space for BIPOC individuals to have plots, tools, seeds, and resources to practice food cultivating skills and have a fresh, affordable source of organic produce.  We are adding shrubs and trees to create sustainable landscaping and food sources, as well as natural medicinal plants and herbs.

In order for us to do this work effectively, we need community support through funds and supplies.  Ongoing needs are soil, compost, lumber, transplants, organic fertilizer, and mulch. Other plans to add to our sustainable spaces include purchasing rain barrel systems, tools, and tool storage.

In Texas we are blessed to have an amazing Fall and Winter growing season, so receiving your support now means we can hit the ground running with our gardening and provide quality education for our group! Help us heal our community by supporting us financially!
