OUR STORY -
Hello — we’re Hamish and Lenny and we’re in Year 9.

We have walked the Kokoda Memorial Track - the 1000 Steps - to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Burns Unit.

Around 1000 kids are treated for burns every year. This year we became a part of the statistic suffering a burn requiring a skin graft.

We learnt from this experience how little we knew about burns, how serious burns can be, how quickly they can happen and what to do in an emergency, and importantly what not to do.

We completed a St. John's First Aid Course and interviewed Royal Children's Hospital surgeons and nurses about burns treatment.

Burns need to be placed under cool fresh running water for 20 minutes immediately. This removes the heat, stops the burning, cleans and reduces the risk of infection. No cream should be applied, as this can keep the heat in.

We want to use our experience to create awareness of how to treat a burn and raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital who provided immediate care and skin graft surgery, which repaired the burn.

Burns are one of the main reasons kids end up in hospital. 22.5% of all burns occur in children, and around 42% of those children are aged between 5 to 16 years old, which is us.

We completed the 1000 steps with our family and friends on October 27th, and are proud of our efforts.

Please donate to support the Royal Children’s Hospital and please update your knowledge on how to care for a burn.
