The Roze Family from Ukraine Needs Your Help

Back in Ukraine, the Roze family - Danylo and Olena were a hardworking and happy couple who welcomed their baby Max in December of 2021. Their life was normal and content until February 24th, 2022 when Russian invaders started bombing Ukrainian cities. Being located near a military base in Odesa, their apartment was in the first line of fire. Rockets, bombs, and military airplanes were flying over their home. Daily. “The ground was shaking so hard,” Danylo says. “We didn’t know if we should pray or say our last goodbyes.”
Despite the constant shelling, they stayed in besieged Odesa until four missiles hit an oil refinery near their home, blowing to pieces everything around it. A residential building in the city was hit, killing a newborn with his mother. They decided that they couldn’t stay there any longer. They left everything behind: their home, car and possessions when they fled the country.
After a long journey through Moldova, Spain and Mexico on borrowed money from Olena’s distant relative and help of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, they crossed the U.S. border on Humanitarian Parole and arrived in the Seattle area. They found themselves in a small house in Kent with nine people, living in two bedrooms with Olena’s distant relatives.
This is where we came in. The Nova Ukraine organization that we had signed up with a few weeks before asked us if we could take in this Ukrainian family, who needed housing. They were extremely stressed when we first met them. Danylo kept apologizing: “We never asked strangers for help before. Our baby cries sometimes. I hope he doesn’t bother you too much.” They only calmed down when we told them we have grandkids, we know babies cry.
For now the Roze family has a safe place to live but they need to rebuild and establish their lives. We created this GoFundMe to raise funds to help them purchase a car to drive to appointments and work once Danylo’s work authorization has cleared. We are also raising funds to help with the costs of an immigration lawyer, medical expenses, a car seat, a baby bed, diapers and baby food. Danylo had a back surgery scheduled from a work injury the day of the invasion and will have to eventually take care of that.
The funds will be given directly to Danylo Roze, whom we (Irina and John VanPatten) are hosting in our home in Everett, Wa.
