The Saxapahaw General Store Needs Your Help

Since 2008, the Saxapahaw General Store has been a reliable community hub that provides many services to the Saxapahaw area, including groceries, gas, and farm-fresh food made with local and organic ingredients. We provide employment to dozens of people (cashiers, kitchen staff, dishwashers, etc), and we are one of the main outlets for local farmers to sell their meat, eggs and produce.
The Saxapahaw General Store is owned and operated by married couple Jeff Barney and Cameron Ratliff-- a true "mom n pop" small American business that provides a critical role in its community, yet operates on razor-thin margins in any regular year.
Like with many small businesses, the current public health crisis and the ensuing economic downturn has very quickly hit us hard, forcing us to cut back hours, lay off staff and it has reduced our ability to purchase inventory needed to keep the store running at the capacity that we and our community need.
Funds raised from this campaign will go towards:
- Employee payroll, so that we don't have to lay off any more than absolutely necessary
- Buying much-needed inventory such as fresh meat, produce, arts, crafts, health & beauty, and essentials. A lot of this goes to local businesses, farmers and craftspeople which will, in turn, help them stay solvent.
- Paying for bills and other maintenance costs
We are so incredibly lucky to be part of such an amazing community of vibrant people. This is a crucial time that will test the resiliency of our village and of the Saxapahaw General Store. After almost 12 years in business, this is a definite make-or-break moment.
We're just a week into this emergency, and experts say that the immediate public health concerns could last for a year, and the economic impact could last for much, much longer. If the General Store is unable to survive, it will have a broad impact across Saxapahaw and southern Alamance County. Even once the immediate danger to public health is over, it could take over a year for this country and the world to recover.
Please. We know this is a difficult time for all, and we ask for any amount that you can donate at this time. And please don't forget about so many of the other small businesses and organizations in Saxapahaw who give this village life:
- The Eddy Pub
- Freehand Market
- Haw River Canoe & Kayak
- Left Bank Butchery
- Paperhand Puppets
- Culture Mill
- Shift Work
- Haw River Ballroom/Cup 22
- Haw River Farmhouse Ales
- SAFE Food Bank
