The Selina Cat Sanctuary - Giving cats life...
Donation protected

The Selina Cat Sanctuary is my small home on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands which I share with multiple wonderful cats. Selina was a very special, precious, and close cat, who sadly passed on and will never be forgotten.
For many reasons, these cats would not have survived in the wild for long, had I not intervened… All the cats get regular veterinary care and this, and all their food costs, treatment, and medication, are paid by me using my limited and varied income.
They have various problems, some of them are victims of deliberate shooting, others have been poisoned, had road accidents, deliberately mistreated, and contracted various diseases. Alongside this, some have chronic viral infections, serious lung conditions, sight problems, and one has Epilepsy.
It costs around €700 per month for all their food, medication, and veterinary and transport costs. Also included in the monthly total are the ongoing expenses to enclose my small garden and patio area as well, to give them more secure freedom. I have provided a small secure outside enclosure that connects to my house, so they at least have some fresh air.
Here is a breakdown of the weekly costs, about €163...

Any donations would be welcome, no matter how small…this will ensure that I can continue to maintain, and improve, the health and lives of these beautiful, intelligent, and inspiring creatures.
I intend to use Instagram and Telegram as well soon, to post video clips and images of the patients...In addition, I intend to create a YouTube channel to promote my activities here and most importantly, the lives of these beautiful patients...
I shall also post regular updates and the latest news on their welfare. With regular reports, images, and video clips about the cats' health, and how their donations have helped them...
…thank you very much…

PATIENT UPDATE 1 - 12-12-23...one of my dear cats Matit had to be put to sleep today, she had a tumour in her trachea and she had severe problems breathing and eating... a very sad time..she was a very, very strong cat and she will be deeply missed.

Matit - left- and her sister Hesat...
PATIENT UPDATE 2 - 12-12-23... Hesat went missing for 2 weeks and I was woken up in the early hours by meowing. Hesat had returned, but both of her back legs were paralyzed. The vet said that she had been shot with an air weapon and her nerves had been damaged.
After medication and daily physiotherapy, she is managing to use her back legs again after almost 5 weeks of treatment. The left one is still a bit weaker...but positive progress.

PATIENTS INTRODUCTION
Part 1 - The youngest and oldest...

Sah... he is only 3 years old and the youngest cat. I found him in my garden in very bad condition, with malnutrition, and eye infections, he was only about 3 or 4 months old. But now he is one of the liveliest residents and a wonderful little character...

Nefertiti... she is a very, very special, beautiful, and intelligent Burmese cat. She is the oldest at 17 years old. She was shot with an air weapon over 13 years ago, but she survived it without complications, even though a recent X-ray indicated that the pellet was still lodged inside.
She is blind now and has kidney problems which require her to have a special prescription diet. But she takes life easy and her quality of life is good at this time...she is a very strong, inspiring and very precious cat...

PATIENTS INTRODUCTION
Part 2

Maat... she was shot twice with an air weapon about 10 years ago. One shot broke her lower jaw which required extensive surgery and recovery time. She also has Calicivirus and some ulcers on her tongue, for which she is getting regular vet checkups and medication. She also needs a special diet...she is such a lively, friendly, and strong cat considering her traumas.

Setka...he was being abused by a neighbour's child and when I rescued him, he had severe psychological problems, similar to PTSD, because of the trauma. He is my only epileptic cat, a result of the mistreatment, and he has seizures about once a week. After 3 years here, he is now a valuable, and happy member of the family.

Maya... about 8 years ago she ran in front of my car and was lucky to be alive. She was about 6 months old, was malnourished, and had eye problems. Recently she had a severe breathing problem that needed emergency treatment. She had a contracted trachea and had fibrosis of the lungs. So I have to monitor her breathing very regularly. A very affectionate, tactile and beautiful cat.

Quetesh... she is the younger sister of my beautiful, precious Selina who passed on over a year ago. She has intermittent Calicivirus problems but is otherwise healthy. She is a gentle, quiet little cat, but very affectionate.

Seka... he was brought to me after a friend found him abandoned when he was about 6 months old. He was in very bad condition but fortunately, he recovered after lots of love and care. A very intelligent, chatty, and tactile cat, he always enjoys a regular cuddle at night.

Khonsu... he is the only surviving son of a very dear and brave cat who passed on two years ago. He has had a few mouth and dental problems recently, 2 years ago he had a major operation to remove an almond blocking his intestines. Very lively, and intelligent. He is the oldest male cat here, he is about 10 years old.

Nebetia... she is the Selina Cat Sanctuary nurse cat...whenever I have a sick cat she always wants to be with them in the enclosure. She licks them and sleeps close to them, as a Siamese cat she is amazingly intelligent and talkative. She was shot in the anus with an air weapon over 7 years ago but has not shown any serious problems although she has intermittent Calicivirus. She is an extremely important part of our lives here.

Makara... she was rescued from my garden with signs of poisoning, and malnutrition and she was pregnant as well. Unfortunately, she miscarried her three kittens, but she made a good recovery. She still has long-term Calicivirus and needs special food. A very strong and wonderful cat.

Aya... she had badly sunburned ears and was vomiting a lot when I found her, also she was quite underweight. She is a very active, alluring, and sensitive little cat. Very chatty and loving AND very popular with the male residents.

Nebka... he is the only cat that I adopted from a friend. He was one of a large litter and his father, Rory, belongs to her. He is a handsome Russian Blue, like his dad, and is 4 years old. He is a major influence on life here, especially biting through milk cartons and opening cupboards. One of the sanctuary's most intelligent and energetic residents.

Immentet...I brought her inside after her twin sister Hesat went missing as I was concerned that she had been shot. She has only been inside for 6 weeks, but has settled in perfectly and is very healthy. Now Hesat is back, they often sleep together and have a close interaction even during Hesat's physiotherapy.

Hesat... Hesat went missing for 2 weeks and I was woken up in the early hours by meowing. Hesat had returned, but both of her back legs were paralyzed. The vet said that she had been shot with an air weapon and her nerves had been damaged.
After medication and daily physiotherapy, which she likes, she is managing to use her back legs again after almost 6 weeks of treatment. The left one is still a bit weaker...but positive progress.
She has proved that she is an extremely strong cat and it is so comforting to know that she and her sister are both now safe from the outside dangers. It is a shame, however, that Matit is not with us anymore, but all three did have a bit of time together before she departed.

Tesheret... Tesheret and Tia are sisters and are the second eldest cats at around 15. Tesheret is a very friendly, talkative, and youthful cat. She has Calicivirus and has regular checkups and treatment. She is another cat that needs to have a special diet.

Tia... She is a bit quieter than her sister but she is a very friendly, affectionate, and vocal cat. She has had a few urinary tract problems in recent years, but nothing serious fortunately.

PATIENTS UPDATE - 16/1/24
Sah has had to go to the vet today with a suspected blocked intestine. The vet gave him an X ray and will compare them tomorrow morning at 1000. It is possible that he has eaten something that needs to be excreted urgently. He has had various medication to ease any discomfort and to progress his bowel movement.
Also, Maya had a few concerning breathing difficulties today and she has had to be monitored continually. She has stabilised, fortunately, after having Anti Inflammatory medication.

Sah at the vet...
A worrying and busy day here...please give him lots of positive thoughts for tomorrow...
PATIENTS UPDATE - 17/1/24
Better news about Sah from the vet this morning, after more x-rays it seems that things are moving slowly, but still waiting for a healthy bowel movement. Similar treatment today as yesterday and another visit to the vet tomorrow morning.
He has to be enclosed for close observation, but he is still very active and vocal. Hopefully tomorrow, things will move faster inside his intestines and we can all relax a bit more.
More positive energy still required...
PATIENTS UPDATE - 19/1/24
After another visit to the vet, for an x-ray. Sah is much better and things are moving normally now. He had swallowed some soft plastic material which hopefully is now out of his system.
After 3 days of being enclosed, he is back to being himself again. And we can all relax...
PATIENTS UPDATE - 20/1/24
Maya has been vomiting a lot this morning, so she is being isolated with a hot water bottle. Have been giving her very small amounts of food during the day and so far no more vomiting.
Will give her an anti-parasite tablet later and hopefully that will solve the problem. But if not, then another vet visit on Monday...will keep you updated on her condition.
PATIENTS UPDATE - 2/2/24
Maya has stabilised and seems to be much better...
However this week has been a bad week for Tesheret. She was not eating much for two days and also she was losing weight.
She has had two visits to the vet and she has multiple problems. A blood test revealed that she has Anemia, an infection and inflammation, but no indication to where these problems are, on top of that she was dehydrated.
Alongside this, she has some mouth ulcers and mild Calicivirus, but fortunately these are not too serious. There might also be a risk of kidney problems, and we will know next week after more tests.
Unfortunately the vet is closed for three days and I am giving her medication at home.
Send her lots of energy everyone...thanks

Tesheret with Makara...
PATIENTS UPDATE - 16/2/24
Tesheret has been putting on some weight and is more active. It is the last day of her antibiotic treatment and she has another week of treatment for her Anemia...her next vet visit is next week , so please keep positive for her...

Tesheret catching up on her 16 hours...
