The Shafer's fight Cancer and Kidney Disease.

Tommy has been battling kidney disease since he was 14 years old. IgA Nephropathy rendered his kidneys useless at the age of 20. He started emergency dialysis on Christmas Eve. He was lucky and found a living donor within months. He was transplanted the day after his 21st birthday. Paige and Tommy started dating shortly after his transplant after being friends for years, and the transplant brought them closer together. Unfortunately, Tommy’s kidney rejected and he landed back on emergency dialysis. Tommy has been on home hemodialysis for 2 years and is the process of getting on the transplant list.  During their home training both Tommy and Paige found a new passion for their career paths, both decided to become dialysis Patient Care Techs so that they could help others in the same situation. Tommy has now reached a point where he can no longer work. In September of 2019 Paige was diagnosed with stage 2 ductal carcinoma HER-2 positive breast cancer at the age of 26. Since her diagnosis she has had to undergo extremely brutal chemotherapy. On March 19th Paige will have a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. She has been unable to work during her treatment due to the severe side effects of the treatment. These kids have been through so much during their short marriage, but it has only brought them closer together. They have both been so positive through everything that they have faced, but they need help.
