The Smith Family Funeral & Recovery
Donation protected
Family & Friends,
I'm Brandon Smith, the son of Sunya L. and twin brother of Brian L. Smith. Many of you have expressed interest in wanting to give to the family to help with funeral expenses (for my mom) and medical expenses (for my brother). This GoFundMe page just serves as a place for those who would like to give to help with these expenses.
As most of you know, on Monday, December 26, my mom and brother were on their way to my house in Laurel for a continued Christmas family gathering when less than a mile from my house, my brother had a seizure behind the wheel and crashed into a tree. My mother unfortunately passed away and my brother is in the hospital fighting life threatening injuries.
Brian had a seizure as a result of a tumor that is enclosed by a cyst that ruptured. Doctors believe the tumor has been there for over a year. Brian has never had any symptoms suggesting he even had a tumor making this tragedy even more shocking. Brian also suffered from two broken shoulders, two broken legs, and a dislocated elbow, among other fractures. Praying that all his surgeries are successful, he will need several months of rehabilitation for full use of his arms and legs.
He has already had one surgery on his legs to prevent infection from various bones that broke through his skin. He will need a second surgery on his legs which will include implanting rods to enable him to eventually walk normally. He has also had surgery to repair his broken shoulders. His right shoulder and dislocated elbow have been repaired with no forseen issues. Doctors are paying close attention to his left arm and required that he not move it for 3-4 weeks to help it completely heal. Based on the success of how it heals, he may need a shoulder replacement for his left arm. A third surgery is scheduled for next week to look at the tumor in his brain. Thankfully, the doctors have informed us that the mass is benign, but with that, it still must be removed.
Any loss is painful, but to have someone taken away so suddenly and tragically is all the more excruciating and devastating. The outpouring of prayers, love, and support we have received has been tremendously overwhelming. It means the world to me, my dad (Wendell), my brother (Eric), sister-in-law (Pharyn) and extended family that so many have rallied behind us, supporting, encouraging and praying for us during such a dark time. For that we are eternally grateful for each and every one of you. God bless you.
