Local Dog Shelter to Close Its Doors After Years of Service to the Community

Monroe, Connecticut - It is with heavy hearts that the SPCA Animal Shelter in Monroe announces its closure. After 16 years of providing a safe and caring environment for dogs and cats in need, the shelter will be closing its doors on May 6th 2023.

Over the years, the SPCA of Monroe has helped thousands of dogs find their forever homes. The shelter has been a vital part of the community and has ensured that dogs and cats in our area have been well taken care of.

“We are doing everything we can to find these deserving dogs and cats a home, but we desperately need help!” Says a spokesperson of the shelter. “Many of these animals are in perfect health, are socialized and are highly adoptable. Some of them while loving and affectionate, are older or have medical conditions.”

Despite best efforts to keep the shelter open, financial constraints have made it impossible to continue operations. The property located at 359 Spring Hill Rd, Monroe is under foreclosure and going to Auction on May 6th. The shelter currently cares for 19 dogs and 14 cats.

“We are most concerned that any animal not adopted or placed in another shelter would be at high risk of being euthanized,” says another volunteer. “We need people to adopt a dog or cat or to make donations to our gofundme page to help cover our vet expenses and possible ‘rehoming’ our animals to other shelters.”

Donations are still desperately needed as we have several "unadoptable" cats and dogs that to save their lives we will have to buy them a spot at another shelter (placement fees).

Interested parties should call or email the shelter to schedule a meet & greet after viewing our homeless animals in need on PetFinder.

Please take a moment to imagine what it is like to care for an animal every day: to see their eyes light up when they see you, to know which treats they prefer, to pray daily they find their forever home, and to make sure that they have their favorite toy at night.

And now those lights in their eyes may fade one last time - without ever going home.
