The Stannard Rock Lighthouse Restoration Project
Help Preserve “The Loneliest Place On Earth”
On Lake Superior, 24 miles from the nearest shoreline, Stannard Rock rises above crashing waves. The lighthouse, known as the loneliest place on earth, dates back to its completion in 1882. Through those 139 years, the structure has shone as a beacon for protecting ships from the hazardous reef upon which it stands.
Today’s Importance
In addition to its continued function as a lighthouse, Stannard Rock is more importantly a critical Great Lakes research facility for climatology, weather forecasting, wave monitoring, and the study of lake biology and water quality.
The Problem
Stannard Rock needs help. To maintain the lighthouse’s value as an essential research center and historical monument, it requires a major restoration. And passionate people intent on making that happen have dedicated themselves to the mission. The lighthouse is owned by the Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP) a Great Lakes non-profit organization located in Marquette, Michigan. Join the collaboration!
The Strategy
Our objective is to produce a comprehensive and riveting documentary film as a fundraising tool for restoring Stannard Rock. The film will document the lighthouse’s rich history, that began when its namesake Captain Stannard discovered the reef in 1847 while sailing the “John Jacob Astor", the first American commercial vessel to sail Lake Superior.
Our documentary will celebrate the incredible effort it took to build Stannard Rock; the people who kept the light shining; and most importantly how this unique structure in the middle of one of the world’s largest lakes is so critical to scientific research. The film and related assets developed will be used to raise the necessary capital for the restoration, and you can be a part of it!
Thank You!
All who donate $100 or more will have their name placed on a plaque that will be proudly displayed At StannardRock and will receive memorable credit in our upcoming documentary! If we achieve our fundraising goal, the top 5 contributors will receive an all expense paid visit to the Lighthouse!
