EXPECT A MIRACLE FOR JORDAN STEINMETZ
Andrew and Kristen welcomed Jordan Micah Steinmetz to the world at 37-weeks on Monday, December 28, 2020, and what a joyous gift from God! While Baby J remains in the NICU at the hospital, he is an amazingly strong little guy who is fighting and showing that God is greater than our circumstances. We believe in miracles and know that God has a remarkable plan for Jordan’s life.
Jordan’s dramatic entry into this world began with a crash Cesarean within 30-minutes after the couple arrived at the hospital at 10 p.m. that night. Kristen hadn’t been feeling Lil J kick or move quite the way he normally did with cold drinks or during mealtimes. What they thought would just be an ultrasound check-up and monitoring that evening turned into a medically necessary rush to the Operating Room as Jordan’s heart rate was falling.
Jordan was born without a heartbeat and oxygen deprived for 9-minutes as the amazing NICU team worked to revive him. Thankfully, they saved his life! The hospital NICU has a Hypo therapy “cooling mat” system that he was placed on for 72-hours to help sustain injuries suffered at birth. When the brain or heart is without oxygen it pulls from other organs in the body (the liver and kidneys, in his case) to prioritize the most vital organs. That also caused a hit on those areas of his little body.
After the initial MRI and EEG brain scans, results show that Jordan had suffered some blood clots in utero and additional brain damage at the time of birth. He also had several sub-clinical seizures (not visibly seen) and will continue to be on anti-seizure medication. Prognoses from the hospital’s neurological expert paint a grim picture, but as positive, loving parents, Andrew and Kristen are choosing to believe through prayer with God’s healing, and Jordan’s sheer determination and strength that he will grow up with few delays into a strong boy and man with a purposeful future and testimony.
Jordan’s parents learned the same week that he has a congenital heart defect. It’s not an especially uncommon condition and is not life-threatening but will require corrective surgery (thankfully not right away!) in one to four years.
Jordan has already received some of the best medical interventions during his NICU stay. And though the numerous tests, procedures, and developmental therapies Jordan is receiving seem daunting for his parents, Andrew and Kristen are humbled at the vast support and resources he has received from the hospital - doctors, nurses, and specialists.
While the medical costs are something that are expected, financially they will be overwhelming. This was not something they or anyone could fathom planning for at the birth of their child. We created this GoFundMe to support this amazing family. Funds will be used to pay for medical bills, medications, developmental therapies with any related equipment, and all things related to help this family focus on Baby J at the beginning of their new journey.

Andrew and Kristen continue to express their gratitude and sincerest appreciation for the outpouring of love, support (with home cooked meals, dining/gas/gift cards, house cleaning help) prayers and donations they’ve already received. UPDATE:
EXPECT A MIRACLE ~ Jan 18, 2021
Jordan is 3-weeks old and has reached 40-weeks gestation. Our precious miracle has done great over the last week coming off oxygen, having a PICC line removed and starting to gain weight. We’re so pleased that he requires less medical intervention as his little body is doing the work necessary after his grand entrance; specifically his liver is functioning better now with his glucose level coming up, his bone marrow is producing the platelets, and his kidney function and intestines are doing their job quite nicely (lots of good wet and stinky diapers for us and his nurses).
This week our main goal, PRAYER and where we’re expecting a miracle is for successful bottle feeding! The Speech therapist who is helping him/us with the bottle feeding has given the process he needs to accomplish:
⁃ Skill (mechanics)
⁃ Endurance (needs to complete feeding without expending more energy to get the volume)
⁃ Efficiency (less dribble, smooth suck, swallow and breathe)
It seems like it should be easy but for our lil guy who had a rough start neurologically, this is something he needs to learn and excel this week.
Also, another continued prayer still is ...
- For Jordan’s brain to be healed and the trauma to be minimized beyond the experts’ opinions. And clinically, his progress and growth, milestones, are visible and met with little delay before any future MRIs.
A couple highlights and reasons that we’re so incredibly grateful for all the prayers and support and love, are:
⁃ Mom enjoying more skin-to-skin with Baby J and a first crack at non-nutritive feeding
⁃ Dad having skin-to-skin with sweet little J and having a ball seeing Jordan’s many expressive faces during reading time
⁃ Mom and Dad connecting more and more deeply with our little guy, so encouraged to see cute little smiles when we massage his head or seeing him be slower to be agitated, and quicker to relax after something does upset him a bit.
As we walk into this new week, please join us in praying for the above mentioned and our hearts as parents ...
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
Philippians 4:6 NIV
With love, faith, hope ... and expecting a miracle,
Kristen and Andrew
