Steven Wessel (1992-2019) could be likened to a fireworks show: something beautiful and bright, made even more spectacular by music, a reason for people to be together. Something that makes us forget the dark night for a while with stunning bursts of color, reminding us to focus on the joy that the world has in store for us.

Like a beautiful firework, Steven burned brightly and was full of energy. He had a deep, unwavering love for his parents and his siblings, his grandparents, his cousins, his aunts, his uncles, his two dogs, and his friends.

Steven was astoundingly talented: his love for family and food motivated him to cook often, bringing back old family dishes and creating new ones to share. His family has described hearing him sing and "everything else just falling away," leaving the audience in tears. He had just recently discovered his love of styling hair, blowing away his fellow classmates and teachers with his natural ability to create beauty. He had just begun his journey to start a promising career, creating a home with his little family of puppies, and sharing the joy of his accomplishments with all of us who cheered him on.

However, the beauty of a firework is set on the backdrop of a dark night, and unfortunately Steven did battle his own darkness. Diagnosed with Addison's disease as a young child, he decided very early on to live his life brightly.  He wanted a normal life, just like everybody else.  As a result, Steven often struggled to keep his body and spirit healthy. The loss of his bright light in this world at the age of 27 is indescribably painful.

Having lost our Nana only 6 months ago, the family wants desperately to give Steven the goodbye he deserves but are worried about the finances it will take to do so. The expenses around a funeral are many, and on top of grieving our brother, son, and friend, we hope that there may be others who can help us carry the financial burdens.

A Memorial Service will be scheduled shortly for Steven in Florida.  For friends and family who reside in New York, we will be celebrating the gift of Steven's life up north in the new year.

As written for Vincent van Gogh, another artist who left us too soon, "Steven, this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you".

Thank you for reading Steven's story. Whatever you can contribute, the family and loved ones of Steven would be eternally grateful. If you can't contribute financially, please consider sharing Steven's story with others.

Love,

Steven's family
