The Story of Borrower Defense Hero, Alicia Davis
Donation protected
If you were ever scammed by a shady for-profit college or training program, you have almost certainly benefitted from the work of Alicia Davis.
Alicia, affectionately known by thousands of defrauded student loan borrowers as Mokie Ginger, has been relentlessly fighting for justice since 2008.
She faught not only for herself, but has stepped up to the plate to help hundreds (if not thousands) of people apply for Borrower Defense to Repayment in the hopes that justice would be done for anyone who experienced the same kind of education fraud as her.
From 2006-2008, she attended a school (owned by the now defunct Corinthian Colleges) where she worked hard to excel in her studies, only to find out that her credits would not transfer, the credentials she earned would not be accepted by employers, and she was told there was nothing she could do to fight back.
Since 2008, she has dedicated much of her free time to helping total strangers in their own fight for justice against shady for-profit schools, who rob students of their federal student loan money, leaving them deep in debt, often overcome by despair, and with “degrees” that are not worth the paper they are printed on. She has never charged a penny to share the wealth of knowledge she has accumulated over the years. She helps us because it is the right thing to do.
Her dedication to this cause has never wavered. In fact, when she was forced to flee her home during Ian, she continued trying to administrate the multiple Borrower Defense Facebook groups and other social media groups she founded in service to this cause. During the few times that she had to step away, she made sure other activists could step in to help those who she had selflessly taken under her wing.
This week, Alicia’s undying dedication to assisting defrauded students means that thousands of students will have loans related to their scam schools cancelled- helping them get a fresh start without the massive burden of fraudulent debt weighing them down.
Doing this work with her over the last few years, I have come to know her as selfless, incredibly kind, dedicated, and fierce. I am so proud to call her my friend and I hope that you will consider making a donation here so that Alicia, our dear Mokie Ginger, can build a cushion for herself. She has, without a doubt, earned it.
