Carnedd - Artist Displacement in Cardiff
Donation protected
Carnedd - a collective comprising three of Wales' leading arts organisations - is facing eviction.
Since the late 2010s, tactileBOSCH, SHIFT and Umbrella have all been based in the Capitol Centre, Cardiff. As of January 2025, we have been served an eviction notice, meaning we are losing two primary studio spaces, as well as five other affiliate spaces. We're retaining only one of our studio spaces, but we are expecting to receive notice on this space soon. When this happens, Carnedd will have nowhere else to go, resulting in the displacement of artists, artwork, and crucial capital equipment.
Live shows, exhibitions, residencies, workshops - each organisation provides much-needed space for creative communities to meet, connect, and thrive. They form a powerful cornerstone in the arts ecosystem in Wales, which contributes hugely to the artistic development and output of this nation.
This fundraiser is a direct appeal to help safeguard and secure the future of the arts in Wales in a time of crisis in the cultural sector.
The funds raised here will primarily be going towards our first year of running costs in a new space, and will directly support the grassroots scene in Wales. Any amount, big or small, will be gratefully received and used to support our artist communities. A new space is currently being prospected, however, it is likely we will have to leave Cardiff if we cannot raise the required funds.
Carnedd is made up of the following;
tactileBOSCH has been Wales' leading performance art organisation for nearly 25 years. It champions live work by both emerging and established artists, with a strong emphasis on international collaboration.
SHIFT Cardiff was formed by Jon Ruddick in 2018 in a direct response to the lack of experimental sound provision in Wales. It regularly hosts shows and gigs for sound artists, acting as a vital testbed for new sound and noise work.
Since 2020 Umbrella has existed as a point of convergence for artists in Cardiff and Wales, hosting exhibitions, residencies and workshops. It exists to support and elevate artists, providing an invaluable home for artists in Wales to flourish.
