The tragic death of Camden Verlaan and the fight for justice
Donation protected
In March 2023, 20-year-old Camden Verlaan was killed in Peru when he was electrocuted by a live current coursing through a waterfront sidewalk.
My long time friend Vince Verlaan had his son’s life randomly and tragically cut short by the negligence of the two power companies upgrading a powerline near to where Camden was volunteering at a dog rescue centre in Huanchaco and learning to surf while there. Neither company has acknowledged Camden’s death nor their failure to follow any of the required safety protocols and rules.
Camden had worked at a café in his hometown of Roberts Creek, BC, for over a year to fund his first solo international travel. He was volunteering in Peru and learning to surf while there.
Camden’s death has left a permanent void, but Vince is determined to fight for accountability, believing this is an important way to honour his son’s memory. He has been working with lawyers and the local prosecutor to establish and pursue a criminal case in the face of silence from both companies. The Canadian embassy in Peru has provided little support, offering a letter stating that staff are “monitoring” the legal process.
Vince is facing a critical point in his pursuit of justice. He has exhausted his own resources and is unable to fully fund the legal fight for much longer. With no financial backing for either the criminal or civil cases, and many expenses related to Camden’s death, Vince is relying on public and political pressure to keep the case alive and force the companies to take responsibility.
I am asking you to help Vince by donating here so he can keep advancing the legal proceedings and the push for accountability in Peru. This is how we can help achieve respect and justice for Camden while also ensuring no other family faces a similar tragedy. Donate what you can and please also spread the word. Thank you!
