The Tragic Loss of my Parents

Early on the morning of Friday, December 30, 2022, my parents, Wallace and Hazel Grieger, passed away as the result of a tragic house fire at their home in Irving, Texas.

It is personally very hard for me and my wife to ask for help, but at this time we have decided that our needs far outweigh our pride, and many have asked how they can help. So, here is an opportunity to help us.

We would like to be transparent so that others understand what we have been dealing with as we began to sort out the details of my parents’ estate and affairs.

My parents died without a will, and at this time it appears without any life insurance. They had not been paying their homeowner’s insurance, so the only insurance in place was a policy forced on them by their mortgage company. The policy lacked many coverages a traditional homeowner’s policy might have had, as it is more focused on making sure the loan is covered. Eventually, we will be able to sell the home site, as well as one vehicle that was not badly damaged, but this will all take months to sort out. And then there is an issue of property taxes not paid since 2018, fines and fees they were being assessed for various matters, and the costs of administrative paperwork, filing fees, etc to handle all these processes.

In the meantime, we have made arrangements to buy a burial plot. However, due to other family obligations, I was not financially prepared to bury one parent, much less two, and under such tragic circumstances that are requiring extra expenses as my wife and I remain in Texas away from our home in Virginia, and may be for several weeks. The costs of arrangements, services, and other expenses such as headstones are quickly adding up.

After many extended family members and friends encouraged us to do so, we finally decided that the only way to not leave ourselves financially strained was to accept the help being offered by others. So, we agreed to set this fund up so that others could contribute as they feel led to.
