The Vermilion Way
Donation protected
My name is Thomas B. Thompson and I am a retired Assistant United States Attorney. Over the past nearly three years, I have observed how Superintendent Jerome Puyau and the teachers and support personnel of the Vermilion Parish School District have worked to improve the quality of education in Vermilion Parish. The District is in the top ten districts in the State of Louisiana and is the number one rated school district in the Acadiana region. Notwithstanding these successes, certain members of the Vermilion Parish School Board have worked to oust Superintendent Puyau.
Pursuant to state law, "[e]ach local school board shall serve in a policymaking capacity that is in the best interest of all students enrolled in schools under the board's jurisdiction." Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 17, Section 81(A)(1). A school board shall select a superintendent who manages the district and acts in the best interest of all students to prioritize student achievement. Act 1 of 2012 effectively shifted power away from individual school board members to school superintendents. Superintendents now perform many duties once held by school boards.
This has resulted in Superintendent Puyau becoming the target of baseless efforts to remove him from office. Superintendent Puyau has been suspended and sued by these individuals and has incurred personal legal expenses in excess of $50,000 to defend against such efforts that would lead to his termination as superintendent. Superintendent Puyau, relying upon state law, Vermilion Parish school board policies and his contract, continues to resist these Vermilion Parish School Board member's efforts to effect his termination.
Any and all donations will greatly appreciated and will go to defray the personal legal expenses incurred by Superintendent Puyau as he defends against the allegations of his detractors. Donations are needed immediately to alleviate the financial burdens imposed upon Superintendent Puyau and his family. However, no payments will be made to nor received by Superintendent Puyau or any member of his family. Your support will enable Superintendent Puyau to continue to resist those members of the Vermilion Parish School Board who want to terminate his contract.
THERE IS NO STATED BENEFICIARY OF THIS CAMPAIGN AND NEITHER SUPERINTENDENT PUYAU NOR ANY MEMBER OF HIS FAMILY WILL RECEIVE ANY OF THE FUND. IT IS THE INTENT OF THIS CAMPAIGN TO PROVIDE LEGAL COUNSEL WITH AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PAYMENT OF FEES WHICH WILL BE MADE CONSISTENT WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE GOFUNDME PROGRAM AND APPLICABLE STATE AND FEDERAL LAWS.
CAUTION! YOU SHOULD MAKE SURE THAT YOUR DONATION IS PERMITTED UNDER YOUR STATE'S ETHICS RULES. IF YOU FEEL THAT ANY DONATION THAT YOU WISH TO MAKE MAY IMPLICATE SUCH RULES, YOU SHOULD REFRAIN FROM MAKING A DONATION. IF YOU HAVE MADE A DONATION TO THE FUND AND FEEL THAT SUCH DONATION MAY IMPLICATE SUCH RULE, A REFUND OF YOUR DONATION SHOULD BE REQUESTED.
