Help Save The Walks
The purpose of this project is to restore The Walks’ Wall & Bridges, so that this unique, historic and beautiful walkway in the heart of Loughrea, can continue to be enjoyed by present & future generations.
In 2017, Galway County Council commissioned a Conservation Plan for The Walks. Following this, a number of local people came together and formed a voluntary group primarily to see if funding could be secured to do the work outlined in the Conservation Plan.
The group’s application to the Outdoor Recreation Scheme for 2019 was successful. The first phase of works was completed last year. €100,000 (80%) of the cost of work for Phase 1 was grant aided with the balance of 20% having to be made up through fundraising/contributions (€12,500) and voluntary labour.
The Walks area is protected under national monument legislation. The repair of the wall and bridges must be carried out in keeping with best conservation practice by tradespeople who are experienced in this type of historic repair/restoration work. Work to date has been carried out by Mathieu & Mitchell Contractors, who specialise in conservation.
The Walks Project - Phase 1
This year’s application for funding was also successful (€100k 80%). Work is underway with the focus being on conserving the bridges. This phase of work will be completed by the end of Oct 2020. The group will continue to apply for this grant on an annual basis until the work is finished (5 years in total) Each year, match funding must be provided.
Phase 2: Prep. work off site
To date this project has received fantastic support from individuals and businesses in the community. This gofundme has been set up to facilitate anybody who would like to make a donation, in particular Loughrea people, living elsewhere, with fond memories of their hometown and especially The Walks.
