THE WHITE HEAD ISLAND PROJECT
Donation protected
White Head Island is a small fishing community in the Province of New Brunswick. In October/2017, our only store closed, as it was no longer viable. We now take the ferry to Grand Manan Island for groceries, an inconvenience yes, but not serious. While our Baptist Church very well fulfills the spiritual needs of its parishioners on Sundays, the store's closing amounted to the loss of our centre of gravity, Monday to Saturday. This loss has had a profound effect on our residents and left a good many souls somewhat lonely and foundering. This was where we communicated with each other over morning coffee and afternoon tea. A place where our fishermen could assemble to discuss their day's work and trade lies at the "Liars Bench"! More importantly, a place for our youth to gather and plan their day's mischief.
Our goal, through this fundraising effort, is to build a small community centre to make up for this loss. It would have a small cafe and an area for our youth to play ping pong and games etc. It would also serve as a gathering spot for community suppers etc and provide the only public facilities on the island for tourists, which is very important.
Funds raised will go to our NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION (#606275) named, the WHITE HEAD RECREATIONAL COUNCIL INC, which is registered at the Corporate Registry Office with the Government of New Brunswick. Funds will be used only to purchase building materials etc. for the community centre. It is our hope that our goal of $43,200.00 will be matched by both provincial and federal funding agencies to meet an overall sum of $160,000.00 which is the estimated cost of the centre. In addition to the money raised so far through GoFundMe , we have raised another approximately $34,000.00 through corporate sponsors etc.
To date, we have been shown some wonderful generosity. For the sum of one dollar, Cooke Aquaculture Inc. has sold us an ideal piece of property opposite our old store. We have pro bono legal assistance. A respected New Brunswick architect, who wishes anonymity, has designed our community centre on a pro bono basis. As well, we have a number of 'at cost' commitments for excavation, concrete etc. Moreover and of equal importance, THIS COMMUNITY CENTRE WILL BE BUILT BY THE COMMUNITY ITSELF! We hope to break ground in April, 2019. Please share our link with your friends!
On Behalf of the White Head Recreational Council, we wish to thank you for your support.
