“The Years We Have Been Nowhere” is a documentary about deportation in 2021.

Sulemain, Madame Manseray, and Patrick left Sierra Leone looking for a better future. After they arrived in Europe and the USA, they began to re-build their lives around the new people that they met. They were all married and had children.
During their time in the Western countries, they paid taxes and they respected the laws until, due to a small bureaucratic problem or an administrative violation, they were condemned, arrested, and sent “home,” back to a place that they had left years before.

Their parents, siblings, and relatives, those that invested all their money to ensure a brighter future for them, did not accept their empty-handed return –  without money for the family they were a fresh burden on their relatives.
Sulemain, Madame Manseray, and Patrick were outcast; abandoned, humiliated, stigmatized and traumatized for the second time. First, when they were deported from the Western countries and, second, when they were exiled from their compatriots back in Sierra Leone.

“The Years We Have Been Nowhere” is a story of suffering and desperation. Yet despite the hardship, the deportees have found help from others like them. To oppose deportation is impossible. To oppose the brutal treatment is, however, civilized. Deportation in a dignified form is possible.

OUR GOAL

Our goal is to collect 21.349 euro to help us to tell this story.

With the film we want the audience to have a visceral reaction. We want to show the distinction between a human being and package, the distinction between a human being and a percentage point to be used in an electoral campaign.

The dramatic experience of a father and mother who cannot see their child grow up, and the psychological and social affects on the lives of the adults and the children will be at the heart of this crowd founding campaign.


OUR TARGET
Reaching our target will allow us to travel to Freetown, Sierra Leone, to meet the deportees. We want to understand what happened after Sulemain, Madame Manseray, and Patrick were deported, and what happened, psychologically, when they were forced to leave behind their loved ones.
We also want to understand why the only people that are able or willing to help a deportee are ex-deportees and why becoming a deportee is so stigmatized as though being pulled apart from their family is their fault.
After that, we will travel to Berlin, London, and Ludwigshafen, to discover what happened to their partners (or ex-partners) and to their children. We will also meet the people that work at the immigration offices, and those people that tried to prevent their deportations.


WHY WE NEED TO RAISE MONEY?
We need funding for travel and filming. We need funding for the right cameras to realize the best documentary possible that will enable it to be shown on the most common platforms (TV, on demand, streaming). We need funding to edit the film, and to add subtitles so that it can reach the world (Italian, English, German, French, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Dutch, Portuguese, Japanese, Malawi, Hindi).


THOSE INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT
Mauro Piacentini is the director and producer. After the successful release of Posto Unico and Profondo Bianco he flew to Africa, during the COVID-19 storm and unconcerned about other serious diseases (Typhoid, Malaria, Cholera) to work on the African part of the filming. 

Olivia Godding started her career as an actress and model when she was twelve. She worked for magazines such as Elle, Fille, and Cover and she appeared in the George Clooney movie Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Now she is a successful businesswoman in Sierra Leone, and she will appear as a witness, because she also is a migrant.

Markadams Kamara left Sierra Leone a couple of months before the war. After that, he lived and worked in the Ivory Coast, then he moved to central Europe, (France and Germany) where he got married and had a kid, before being deported back. In Sierra Leone, he worked with a theatre company and now works in finance.

Mike Duff is an Australian video-maker. He lived in Southeast Asia for four years and after that he moved to Sierra Leone. After saying “I will stay in Freetown for only one year,” he has been here for nine years. He has worked with the BBC, Al Jazeera, and ABC, as a freelancer, cinematographer and cameraman.

Lucio Cascavilla is an activist and a writer. He lived in China for 10 years and has worked on documentaries and short movies. When he moved back to Europe, he published three books in Italian: two about China and one science fiction. He has lived in Sierra Leone for two years and cooperated with blogs and magazines.

Roberto Sommella,  highly qualified video editor, Roberto Sommella is a post-production expert with a thorough knowledge of the full editing tools and a lot of experiences as a video maker. After his graduation in Japanese Language and Literature in Naples, he's been living around Europe and gained more than 15 years of experience in the video production. He has had the chance to work with several platforms, software and cameras on a broad spectrum of productions, from fashion to sports, from branded content to corporate, from marketing to fiction or short films like "Deep white", presented in 2006 at the Venice Film Festival, in the market.

Antonio Rignaneseis a Digital Strategist and deals with online communication for companies and professionals. In the past, an Emergency activist for the province of Foggia and Macerata, he has always been keen and active on issues of international cooperation and human rights.

Nina Krajčinović  before, in between and after her graduation in Sinology and Sociology of Culture in the University of Ljubljana (Slovenija) in 2006, she lived and studied in Kunming, China on and off for a couple of years. After returning back to her hometown of Ljubljana in 2011, she started to write for main Slovenian newspaper Delo, writing mostly about urban culture and subcultures in Slovenia’s capital, as well as having a weekly column Levo mnenje (Left opinion). In 2008 she worked as an interpreter for Slovenian sports team at the Beijing Summer Olympics. Recently, she is working as a freelance screenwriter.

Nino Corica was born in Messina (Italy) on 22.12.1978. Graduate in oriental languages and civilisation at L'orientale University of Naples, now lives in Belgium working for the European Commission as Communication and Administrative agent.

“The Years We Have Been Nowhere” è un documentario che parla di deportazioni, oggi; nel 2021.

Sulemain, Madame Manseray e Patrick hanno lasciato la Sierra Leone in cerca di un futuro migliore; giunti in Europa e negli USA hanno costruito le proprie vite intorno alle persone che hanno incontrato per strada: si sono sposati e hanno avuto figli.

Dopo aver rispettato le leggi e pagato le tasse, a causa di problemi burocratici e di piccole infrazioni al sistema giudiziario amministrativo sono condannati: la polizia li strappa alle braccia dei propri cari e li riaccompagna a “casa”: il posto che avevano lasciato qualche anno prima e dove avevano perso i contatti con gli amici e i familiari.

I genitori, i fratelli, le sorelle e tutti i congiunti, che avevano investito i propri averi, per permettere ad almeno uno di loro di costruirsi un futuro migliore altrove, non possono accettare chi rientra a mani vuote senza aver portato alcun beneficio economico, alla famiglia e al clan.

Sulemain, Madame Manseray e Patrick diventano paria, outcast; abbandonati e scacciati due volte dall' occidente e dai propri compatrioti, in Sierra Leone.

“The Years We Have Been Nowhere” è una storia di disperazione e di sofferenza; quella alla quale queste persone sono sottoposte.

A Freetown, dove vengono scortati, arrivano con le catene alle braccia, come se schiavitù e rimpatrio fossero due facce della stessa brutalità, nonostante gli ex deportati aiutino i nuovi deportati.

Opporsi alle deportazioni è impossibile; opporsi alla brutalità, permettendo agli uomini e alle donne deportati di mantenere la propria dignità, è civiltà.

IL NOSTRO OBIETTIVO

Raggiungere l’obiettivo ci permetterà di volare in Africa a incontrare i deportati, rispediti indietro, perché non li vogliamo e dobbiamo aiutarli a casa loro, e le loro famiglie, che hanno investito tutto per farli partire e che non hanno più nulla.

Capire cosa è successo quando Sulemain, Madame Manseray e Patrick sono rientrati, quali strascichi fisici e psichici ha portato l’allontanamento dai propri affetti; scoprire come mai gli unici che si decidono ad aiutarli sono solo coloro che hanno ricevuto sulla propria pelle lo stesso marchio infamante.

Per le famiglie rimaste in Sierra Leone essere riportati indietro non è un dramma, ma una condanna; essere separati dalle proprie famiglie è una colpa.

Successivamente voleremo a Berlino e a Londra per andare a scoprire quali macerie relazionali e affettive i deportati hanno lasciato alle proprie spalle, intervistando chi è rimasto indietro e non ha abbandonato la propria stabilità per andare a riprendere il proprio partner, e i figli cresciuti senza padre o madre, perché la burocrazia si è messa di mezzo.

Conosceremo gli addetti all’immigrazione, coloro che li riaccompagnano a casa e gli avvocati che cercano di assistere e hanno cercato di impedire la loro deportazione. 

Realizzare questo film servirà a raccontare la storia dei dimenticati e delle loro famiglie.

Il nostro obiettivo finale è sensibilizzare gli spettatori; noi vogliamo differenziare l’essere umano dal pacco postale, nel quale, a causa di leggi e di frontiere, decise a tavolino, lo si vuole trasformare, quando un confine non cambia la conformazione del territorio, ma solo il suo nome; in questo caso il deportato è utilizzato per meri interessi elettorali e da persona, magicamente, si trasforma in percentuale.

Il dramma del padre o della madre che non può vedere crescere i propri figli e che avrà effetti sulla psicosocialità degli adulti e dei bambini sarà il cuore della nostra campagna. 

Chi beneficerà di questi fondi saranno i futuri spettatori che si avvicineranno a quest’esperienza scoprendo che, la propaganda televisiva, ululata ai quattro venti non è una scelta priva di conseguenze, ma una decisione che influenza decine di migliaia di vite ogni anno che sono spostate arbitrariamente da un continente all’altro.

A COSA CI SERVONO I SOLDI?

Viaggiare per poter effettuare le riprese, utilizzare telecamere all’avanguardia per poter realizzare il documentario e renderlo disponibile sulle piattaforme che si utilizzano tutti i giorni (Tv, via cavo, on demand e streaming) montarlo e sottotitolarlo in tutte le lingue (italiano, inglese, tedesco, francese, spagnolo, cinese, arabo, olandese, portoghese, giapponese, malawi e hindi) per poterlo diffondere nel mondo.


CHI E’ INVISCHIATO NEL PROGETTO?

Mauro Piacentini regista e produttore, dopo i successi di “Posto Unico” e “Profondo Bianco” volerà in Africa in pieno Covid, incurante di malattie ben più gravi (quali il tifo, la malaria e il colera) per portare a termine le riprese africane.

Olivia Godding ha cominciato l’attività di modella e attrice quando aveva 12 anni e ha posato per Elle, Fille e Cover ed è apparsa in Confessioni di una mente pericolosa, di George Clooney. Adesso è un imprenditrice di successo a Freetown e comparirà nelle vesti di testimone nel documentario, in quanto migrante.

Roberto Sommella è un esperto di post-produzione che vanta una conoscenza approfondita degli strumenti di editing e molte esperienze come video maker. Dopo la laurea in Lingua e Letteratura giapponese a Napoli, ha vissuto in giro per l'Europa e ha maturato più di 15 anni di esperienza nella produzione video. Ha avuto la possibilità di lavorare con diverse piattaforme, software e telecamere su un ampio spettro di produzioni, dalla moda allo sport, dal branded content al corporate, dal marketing alla fiction o a cortometraggi come "Deep white", presentato nel 2006 al Festival del Cinema di Venezia, nel settore Industry.

Markadams Kamara ha lasciato la Sierra Leone subito prima della guerra alla fine degli anni 90. Dopo aver vissuto e lavorato in Costa d’Avorio, si è trasferito nel centro Europa (Francia e Germania) dove si è sposato e ha avuto una figlia, prima di essere deportato. Rientrato in Sierra Leone, si è dedicato all’attività teatrale e adesso si occupa di bilanci.

Mike Duff è un video- maker australiano che dopo aver vissuto nel sud est asiatico per alcuni anni si è trasferito in Sierra Leone. Un solo anno, aveva detto. Vive e lavora a Freetown da 9 anni e collabora con BBC, ABC, Al Jazeera come freelance, progettista, direttore della fotografia e cameramen.

Lucio Cascavilla è un attivista e scrittore. Dopo aver vissuto per 10 anni in Cina e aver lavorato ad alcuni cortometraggi e documentari, ha pubblicato tre libri (due sul paese asiatico e 1 di fantascienza). Da quasi due anni vive e lavora in Sierra Leone e collabora a varie riviste e blog online.

Antonio Rignanese è un Digital Strategist e si occupa di comunicazione on line per aziende e professinisti. In passato attivista di Emergency per la provincia di Foggia e Macerata, è da sempre attento e attivo sulle tematiche della cooperazione internazionale e dei diritti umani.
