The Yoga Equity Project at Laughing River Yoga

The Burlington Yoga Equity Project strives to extend the physical, emotional and spiritual benefits of yoga and meditation to everyone by addressing the inequities that have historically kept many people from accessing yoga spaces.

The project will provide free and incentivized programming designed to support and sustain the health and wellness of our BIPOC community members.

We designed the Yoga Equity Project with these tenets as our guide:

1. Radical Barrier Removal

The Yoga Equity Project strives to confront the disparities that exist in the community by removing the financial barriers preventing some students from participating in wellness opportunities such as yoga.

2. Wealth Redistribution

The needs-based class incentive acknowledges there is a longstanding, vast, and deeply problematic disparity in wealth distribution in the United States. BIPOC households hold a fraction of the wealth that white households do, about one tenth to be exact. Take a moment to let that sink in. 1/10. This disparity is no accident, and emerged as a result of centuries of federal and state policies that systematically hindered the ability of BIPOC households to generate wealth.

Wealth redistribution asks white-bodied people to share their excess in a concerted effort to shrink the racial wealth divide. National conversation surrounding wealth redistribution in the U.S has also begun to use the language of “reparations.” Within the U.S context, this term acknowledges the immense intergenerational trauma inflicted on BIPOC communities and opportunities for repair.

We need your help!

With $30,000 will we be able to continue the weekly affinity classes through 2023. This will greatly benefit the mental and physical health of our community and is a wonderful opportunity for everyone who has had access to, and enjoyed yoga, to give back.

No amount is too little! Any amount that you can give is GREATLY APPRECIATED. These past couple of years have taught us that we need one another. We cannot do it alone. When you give to this project you increase access to wellness in your community. When you donate, you show up authentically and generously, and we are inspired by the power and beauty of our community.

Backed by YOU, we are sure we will have something to celebrate. Join us on April 28, 6:30-8:30 pm at Laughing River Yoga for a Sacred Breath and Movement Experience with Brian Tobin to celebrate our collective efforts!
