Getting young people to grow food in their community

The Young People's Allotment will be a local project, based within Jesmond, aiming to bring young people (under 18) to an allotment to help them understand how they can grow their own food and what is required to do so. The young people will come to the allotment and plant the seeds for their chosen vegetable. Throughout the growing season, they will attend on a scheduled basis to nurture and maintain their vegetable. As a collective, each young person will have grown a vegetable that can be used in their lunches/dinners at home. If the young people want to work as a small group to grow a variety of foods for a meal, they will be able to do this.
Each young person who comes to the Young People's Allotment will be able to understand the work that goes into growing food. Outdoor activities are sometimes very costly and, due to the cost of living crisis, not all children are able to benefit from being outdoors. Some children find sitting behind a screen watching YouTube videos all day relaxing but it is unlikely that this will give them any knowledge or understanding of how our world works, being in the allotment will ensure that they gain valuable skills and promote a healthy lifestyle.
