The Yukon Wild Horses Need Your Help
Donation protected
The Yukon Wild Horses are the most northerly group of wild horses in the world. They endure long winters and harsh environmental factors. In the last few months, it was discovered that besides facing these difficulties, they are facing human predation. A person (or people) has been shooting the wild horses―possibly 8 of the known group of 24 in the last year. The most recent shootings were of the stallion Sundance and his mare Storm, shot dead, leaving their yearling and foal without parents. The yearling Bolt was shot in the front leg at the same time that his parents were shot and killed. He was struggling to survive through the winter with his injury, and has not been seen for some weeks, so he is now presumed dead. The four month old foal, Pippin, was luckily adopted by another mare and stallion. You can follow the posts about what happened to Bolt and his family on the Yukon Wild Horses Facebook page, which start on November 5, 2023. The first post can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/269240104323380/posts/1033637121217004/. If you are interested in reading the rest of the story, go the the Yukon Wild Horses Facebook page and scroll to the November 5, 2023 entry and follow the story from there as it unfolds or type “Bolt” in the search.
The wild horses currently have minimal protection from the Yukon government, and little is known about them. Aud Fischer has been studying them for the last four years and is the local expert on these horses. Our goal is to help Aud continue to monitor the known groups and to expand her search area in the Ibex Valley to find and study other groups of wild horses. Some of Aud's efforts at trying to locate Bolt when he was wounded were covered in an article by the CBC, which can be found here: https://archive.ph/pq2n5
Monitoring, education, and advocacy will hopefully help keep other wild horses from being shot. In order to do this, we are fundraising for more trail cams, a tripod, and money for gas (which can be very expensive in the Yukon).
With your financial help, we can survey, protect, and fight for the recognition that these wildies deserve. If you can donate any amount, it would be appreciated. If you can't donate, please share! Thank you for your interest in the Yukon Wild Horses.
