World's Largest Cherry Pie - Traverse City, MI
Donation protected
Have you ever driven past either of the large pie tins in Traverse City and Charlevoix and wondered why each city has its own World's Largest Cherry Pie?
Here is a little bit of background on this:
In 1976, Charlevoix set out to create the world's first largest cherry pie - and they succeeded. They baked a cherry pie that weighed in at 17,420 lbs and measured 14ft and 4in across.
Fast forward to 1987, and Traverse City enters the picture. Carrying around the label of "Cherry Captial of the World," TC set out to create a larger pie than Charlevoix, and we did just that. Traverse City's cherry pie weighed a whopping 28,350 lbs and measured 17ft and 6in across. But it didn't take long for the record to be stripped from us.
Just three years later in 1990, a small western Canadian town thought they had what it takes to beat the record. A rotary group in Oliver, B.C. baked a cherry pie that weighed over 10,000 pounds heavier (39,683lbs). They still hold the record to this day...
It's time to bring this record home.
What's the plan?
Over the last few months, our team has been nailing down the details to bring the World’s Largest Cherry Pie back to Northern Michigan by planning, designing, and baking a 50,000 lb, 25ft cherry pie.
With the help and support of numerous local companies, our goal is to bring the community together for a feel-good project that everyone will be proud of for generations to come. As I'm sure you can imagine, the materials alone for a project of this size will not come cheap. We are raising funds to purchase products that cannot be donated, such as the stainless steel used to create the pie tin.
On the day of the event, you will be able to come out and show additional support by having a slice of the World's Largest Cherry Pie. Trust us - we won't be running out!
A look at the BIGGER picture:
The strain caused by the pandemic on organizations within our community is unprecedented, which is why all proceeds from the event will be donated directly back into the community through local non-profits and scholarship opportunities. By supporting this project, you are doing much more than just helping bake a pie - you will be playing an essential role in continuing the economic growth and progress that was stunted over the last few years.
Selected non-profits:
· For Love Of Water (FLOW)
· Traverse Bay Children's Advocacy Center
· TC New Tech
· 22 2 None
· Traverse City Tourism
· Cherryland Humane Society
Scholarship Funds For:
· NMC - Entrepreneurial Students
· NMC - Culinary Students
The Investors Club
Everyone who helps contribute to this project is investing in our community. Although, we believe companies and/or individuals who have the financial ability to donate heavy-handed should be recognized.
When the event is finished (and we take back our place in the record book) the 2022 pie tin will be on display in the Traverse City area indefinitely. "Investors" who have contributed $1,000, $2,500, and $10,000 or more will have their name engraved into the pie tin when it reaches its final destination. This three tier system will dictate engraving size and real-estate.
