Actors (from left to right): Kota Horiuchi, Celine Cheung, Katsuto Sakogashira
May 1975: In the basement of a university, three students struggle to keep their club afloat in the wake of riots, protests, and injustice.
Originally conceived on the campus of the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center's National Theater Institute, playwright Aly Tu has been invited to stage her thought-provoking script at the New York Theater Festival Tu's work explores the intersections of Asian identities on a predominantly white college campus amidst the rise of hate crimes against Asian communities.
Aly Tu on “The Clubroom”: “I wanted to explore the differences in Asian identities in America, where we strive for the American Dream from varying perspectives and similar standpoints.”
Playwright of THE CLUBROOM, Aly Tu
ABOUT US & OUR MISSION:
Our goal is to raise $5,000 to cover:
· Food per diem
· Transportation
· Housing for those traveling & supplies including playbills
With extra support, we will be able to offer a stipend to our early-career team to be able to support their incredible work.
The New York Theater Festival’s SummerFest is only the first step in our team’s vision for “The Clubroom”. In supporting our artists in materializing Tu’s visionary script, we hope to create a sustainable production that can move on to larger festivals. We believe this script offers an audience the opportunity for introspection, connection, and exploration of ourselves as well as our society.
Aly Tu on Director, Jack Clark: “Jack’s ability to conceptualize and unearth the text while honoring its original intentions has been a treasure.”
