THE HONOR JOURNEY
Global expeditions engaging Youth Ambassadors in peace-building activities, humanitarian projects, and earth stewardship.

Hi, my name is Taylor Broussard. I am a recent Civil Engineering graduate and I want to tell you about The Honor Journey™, an organization that aims to not only implement drinking water solutions for global communities, but to preserve the health of the oceans, support education, honor indigenous culture, and to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change on the coastal communities who often contribute to it the least.

As an engineering student, I had the opportunity of working in Honduras and Guatemala to implement drinking water distribution systems. Through this experience, I discovered my life's purpose: to honor and protect water in all forms. Water is a sacred gift, fundamental and indispensible for sustaining all life. Our very existence is intimately connected with - - and dependent upon - - the quality of water. Water connects all things.

The gofundme money would be used to pay first for the 2018 drinking water project in Totoya Island.

Check out the new Honor Journey website I launched on May 16, 2018!

The Honor Journey has taken expeditions all over the world. The current journey is described below:

The Honor Fiji Journey 2018
This summer International youth ambassadors will undertake a voyage dedicated to marine conservation and community service with a focus on providing access to clean water for the remote outer islands of the Lau Group, Fiji. The Honor Journey ™  intends to work with community leaders to identify the most pertinent problems and develop the most sustainable and socially acceptable solutions.

Water Security

Fiji’s population is just shy of 850,000 people–roughly the same size as Jacksonville, Florida–but only 47 percent of Fiji Islanders, many of whom are living in poverty, have access to clean drinking water. Year-round access to drinking water is a major challenge in these remote island communities. We are seeking financial support for drinking water systems. Region of focus: Totoya Island in the Lau Island group, Fiji.

We are installing 3 5,200 liter tanks in a gravity fed spring system.

As a coastal community, the Lau Island group is severely impacted by climate change. They are facing the effects of rising sea levels, increasingly damaging cyclons, and marine ecology depletion. We hope to use the islander's personal accounts and stories to raise awareness about the damage climate change is causing in the South Pacific specifically to the communities who contribute to it the least. Getting There:
THE ALVEI
Out of Russell, Zealand, the Alvei, a Main T' Gallant Schooner, is a non-profit co-operative under the expertise of American Captain Evan Logan. The Alvei is 139 ft. with depth of 3-meters and height of 22-meters. The ship has the ability to haul 25 tons of material and berth 18 volunteers.

Her crew underwent a 28 day passage from New Zealand to Fiji with arrival in Suva. The challenging and exciting atmosphere aboard a 3-masted traditional sailing vessel fosters cooperation, responsibility, teamwork and ignites an exchange of ideas. Everyone on board is crew! It takes a team to 'sweat and tail' and navigate through coral reefs sailing over hundreds of nautical miles to remote islands. Activities include weighing anchor, steering, setting sail, line handling, galley duty, ship repairs, and traditional navigation.

FIJIAN PARTICIPATION

Young Fijians are faced with the challenges of a rapidly changing world (globalization, western influences, and environmental issues). Youth on the main land within urban areas are at risk at loosing the strong traditional bond with their Vanua meaning “land, home, and custom”. HFJ provides opportunities for Fijian youth to serve as proud representatives of their cultural legacy and work cooperatively with youth from other nationalities in efforts to engage them in the movement for sustainability.

LAU ISLAND GROUPS

The villages that make up the Lau Islands uphold their traditional lifestyle. For the most part villagers maintain a living through tropical agriculture, and fishing, supplemented by some members working on the mainland.

There are no cars or roads on these islands. Boating or walking is the way of transportation. Supplies come by boat from the mainland. There is no electricity with the exception perhaps of a generator in some villages for a main common building. Thus these islands have retained the South Pacific beauty and easy way of life. Yet opportunities for young people are more limiting and most village schools are lacking in many basic necessities and supplies.

On behalf of this collective effort, we thank you for your consideration. Any financial support is deeply appreciated.

With gratitude,

Vinaka,
