The Gary Sinise Foundation, founded in 2011, states that their purpose is “to honor the nation's defenders, veterans, first responders, [their families,] and those in need” (https://www.garysinisefoundation.org). The foundation serves all branches of the military and their families, but with a focus on those who have physical or financial needs (R.I.S.E. and H.O.P.E). They also have multiple outreach programs centered around community entertainment and education, and even some that are solely designed to connect veterans with other veterans who have shared experiences.

One of the main objectives of the Gary Sinise Foundation includes building specially adapted smart homes for severely wounded veterans, as well as providing adaptive devices, such as motorized wheelchairs, and accessible vehicles. As someone with a physically disabled family member, I understand the vital need to have an accessible home and vehicle, and how not having those things impacts the quality of life for that individual, as well as their independence and personal freedom. This is just one small issue that the Gary Sinise Foundation seeks to remedy, but it is the most expensive venture that they’ve undertaken. The VA estimates that 20% of our nation’s veterans are 100% disabled, and in need of some level of adaptive support (Reese, 2023).

Veterans sacrifice their lives for our freedom. How do we show appreciation and gratitude for their service to our great nation?

16.5 military veterans live in our nation as of the last census (US Census, 2021).

30% of veterans have a service-connected disability (US Department of Labor, 2023).

The employment rate for veterans with disabilities is lower than for veterans without disabilities. The unemployment rate for veterans with a service-connected disability is 6.0% (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2024).

The Gary Sinise Foundation has built 73 specially adapted, mortgage-free, smart homes designed to help our heroes regain independence. They have served over 1,108,000 meals to defenders and funded 908 first responder training grants and donated 12,793 pieces of essential equipment. Gary Sinise has personally donated his time to play 578 concerts and visited 174 military installations since 2003 (Gary Sinise Foundation, 2024).

We plan for the donations to go to the Wounded Warrior Project. Which the foundation uses donations to support veterans through a few things such as special events : Honoring veterans and fostering community connections, building for america's bravest: constructing adaptive homes for severely wounded veterans,mental Health Programs: offering resources for PTSD and mental wellness and emergency assistance: providing financial aid for urgent needs.

Additionally, consider supporting organizations like Wounded Warrior Project, which focuses on mental health and career counseling, and housing programs like Homes for Heroes, which help provide stable housing for homeless veterans. Together, these efforts address both immediate and long-term needs for veterans.

A Personal Message from A Veteran – Russell E. Oliver II

My name is Russell E. Oliver II, and I have served in the United States Marine Corps for more than 20 years. It is only in my retirement that I have realized how painful it is when our heroes return home with poor healthcare, no care, and no means to sustain their own lives. These brave men and women should not have to sacrifice everything for our freedom.

Suppose you risk your life for your country and go "home" to no home and solitude. Too many veterans don’t have access to affordable food, shelter, transportation, mental health support, or other resources. Transition to civilian life is chaotic and stressful, and our heroes are bitter and overlooked daily.

Our mission is to change this reality and repay our veterans for their sacrifice. However, we can't do it alone. We need kind and compassionate Americans like you to help us in this mission. You're not just giving money to this cause; you're providing people with a lifeline. Among the benefits offered are hot meals, warm beds, transportation to doctor's appointments, and counseling services. And in so doing we could lower the suicide rates among our military men and women. They need our support, as Americans, and as people.
