Then Three Were Taken
In June of 1882 a group of Lawrence Kansans took the streets killing three men in a lynching on the Kansas River bridge. Over 135 years later we remember what happened in a documentary film titled, “Then Three Were Taken”, adapted from Napoleon Crews’ book "Vinegar Gang Lynching, Sis Vinegar's Story".
This film is a part of the Equal Justice Initiative Community Remembrance Project. The Douglas County Committee has plans for a forthcoming historical marker in remembrance of Isaac King, George Robertson, and Peter Vinegar. The Equal Justice Initiative has documented at least 18 other racial terror lynchings in the State of Kansas between 1877 and 1950.
The Then Three Were Taken team consists of 20 people working on a volunteer basis to create a short documentary for the Remembrance Ceremony.
