Poetry Circus, Hosted by Nicelle Davis , LA 2015
What is The Poetry Circus:
The Poetry Circus was inspired by the release of the collection, In the Circus of You published by Rose Metal Press . The Poetry Circus is part workshop, community outreach, performance, ride, dance, and creations. This community focused and driven event blurs the line between performer and audience to allow everyone the chance to run away and join the circus.
By presenting poetry in an alternative venue, the egalitarian characteristics of poetry are amplified. Poetry IS for everyone, regardless of where we come from or how we got there; we all process and understand the world through metaphor.

The Ultimate Goal:
$7,000 in 30 days! To fund a Summer of Circus!
April 17th - May 17th
I have several goals listed in detail below; however the main focus of this fundraiser is to bring The Poetry Circus back to LA.
I. The Poetry Circus in LA:
The tentative date for this event is Saturday September 19th (this date is also known for being "talk like a pirate day"--so imagine the fun we poets could have with that!).
II. The Poetry Circus Hits the Road:
In addition the LA Poetry Circus, I would like to host similar events in Colorado, Utah, Minneapolis, and San Diego . I have contacts in each of these locations, making a poetry circus possible--so why not do it--circuses love to travel.
III. The GWHO Sideshows:
Between these larger events I would like to host "sideshows" which I call the GWHO Poetry Parties; the GWHO Poetry Parties are geeky burlesque-like shows that feature poetry focused on the freaky aspects of being human.

Costs
The Poetry Circus costs approximately $2,000 (not including honorariums for performers.) I would love to at least "financially" thank artists who contribute to the next event.
The GWHO Parties costs approximately $200 to produce, plus travel expenses.
Essentially, the more donations gathered the more Circuses we can make!

The Mission of The Poetry Circus:
Poetry is the truth we’d rather not hear brought to us by an unheard melody we cannot ignore. Poetry makes the truth palatable—it helps us digest reality by seasoning it with dreams. It smells like rain and connects us to the world. It makes us look at one another, care about each other.
You cannot hold a poem without feeling a little more human. Poetry is important because it is culture—it tricks us, fools us into being kind.
For example, it has been the circus and poetry that have protected and provoked me to go after my own life. I guess I want to share this gift with people of all ages—my message: this is the one and glorious life!

The Summer Circus Possible Schedule:
The goal is to collaborate with communities and artists across the nation, namely in Alaska, Boston, Colorado, Minneapolis, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Portland, Seattle, Utah and (naturally) LA. I have projects planted and ready to bloom in these locations--they (just like all of California's wild things) need water to grow.
May 1-3rd, Portland: The GWHO Poetry Party is a geeky burlesque-like show of poetry focused on the freaky aspects of being human.
June 7-13th, Alaska: Research and write about the outer reaches of America.
June 21-27th, Colorado: Host a Poetry Circus.
July 5-10th, New York / Boston: The GWHO Poetry Party Continues; a geeky burlesque-like show of poetry focused on the freaky aspects of being human.
Other Events for Summer:
I hope to find summer dates to GWHO in:
Seattle, Los Angeles, Alaska, and Las Vegas.
I will update you once the dates are set and ready!
The Grand Finale:
The Poetry Circus Returns to LA!
A return of The Poetry Circus to its home location is the ultimate goal of this fundraiser. The tentative date is Saturday September 19th.
The Living Poetry Project will be included in all listed events. For more about this project, please visit: nicelledavis.net or nicelledavis.com
