My name is Curtis Pore.
4 years ago I was diagnosed with an incurable form of bone marrow cancer which, as most would expect, changed my life. I am reaching out to friends, family and anyone who can help to support and celebrate the tremendous good that has come from that diagnosis.
It’s hard to describe the transformation that happens when you get news like that. For me, there was an enormous falling away of all that is unnecessary. It made me decide what my life was going to be about. It was a real kick in the ass.
But this story isn’t grim. It’s about a decision, a girl and an old trailer that has somehow become a metaphor for our journey together.
The decision was simple. I wanted to live. I had always been into holistic health, organics and alternative healing and promoted it to everyone I knew. But I was always a business man too and back then, when I first got the news, I was an I.T. entrepreneur following my head rather than my heart. After the diagnosis, I was determined to go back to my roots, to find a way to create health in myself and in others. I decided to be a healer.
4 years later, I’m still standing and I have helped many people with the therapies, food and products that I used to help myself. I call it The Remedy and it is my life’s work.
The girl is my beautiful fiancé, Carol Bruns. It’s humbling how the universe seems to bring the people and things that we truly need in the most unexpected ways. I met Carol while riding a bike through the desert. Talk about life imitating art.
We were at Burning Man 2014 and I was two years into The Remedy, doing a Proof of Concept for what had become a Mobile Holistic Wellness Spa. I took all of the therapies, products and educational materials that I had tested on myself, loaded them into a small trailer and took The Remedy on the road, knowing that Burning Man would be the perfect venue to test myself and my ideas. Carol was there for the music and art and just the sheer fun that this event creates. Even back then, I knew that I had met my Soul Mate. Carol’s courage, Joy, and love of life have been part of my Remedy since we met.
We intend to be married in that same desert this year, at sunset, during Burning Man. It will happen on August 30th, 2016.
The trailer: That is where we need the help. The trailer that I had brought out to Burning Man did the job, but it was too small to fit my vision of what The Remedy could become. I had an old, 1971 Airstream that had been sitting disused for quite some time. It was 31 feet long, had an eye-catching, vintage look and the right infrastructure to become the kind of Facility I had in mind. It was also the same trailer in which I had almost died. A year before Burning Man, I had a severe case of jaundice as a complication of the cancer and lay on the floor of that Airstream for three weeks, getting up only to give myself the therapies that I believed would heal me. It worked.
In fact, my first ideas for The Remedy were formulated lying on that floor. I decided I would build a mobile, holistic wellness spa that could go where it was needed and help as many people as possible. I decided to gut that old Airstream and refit it to become a work of art and healing. It felt good to begin reclaiming and transforming something that had previously held such bitter memories. That is the vision that Carol and I are both still working on today. This concept was so successful at Burning Man two years ago, that we have dedicated enormous time and money to take it to the next level. This is more than just a business. It is a calling.
It is very rare for so many beautiful things to be coming to fruition at the same time. Carol and I have decided to formally commit to one another. And our labor of love, The Remedy, is on the brink of being born. We have planned this and worked for it for a long time. Our goal is to launch The Remedy formally and our vision is to do it at Burning Man. We will do it by dedicating our Mobile Unit and devoted team of six to gifting our therapies for the many volunteers, and staff working tirelessly to help the event come alive. Our hope is that this will be a statement of our union as we take our vows.
We plan to treat 8 people every 15 minutes, 10 hours a day. We hope to be there for three weeks. That’s 3,000-5,000 treatments gifted at Burning Man. Our wedding wish, in lieu of presents for ourselves, is for you to help us fund this mission and launch a revolution in alternative health. Help us to help others.
We have exhausted our funds to make this happen so close to the finish line that we are asking for your support. The build-out on the Airstream is almost complete but there is still much to do and pay for. The expenses to get people to the event, tickets, food, etc. are considerable. Time is running out to accomplish this on schedule. Anything that you can donate would be appreciated.
To those of you who know us, this means so much more to us than getting presents and money for ourselves. We don’t want a traditional wedding. We want to pay it forward and devote as much time and energy as we can to helping people reclaim vibrant health and wellbeing.
By incorporating a gifting event into our wedding, we will be living our dream of healing the planet, one person at a time. Supporting our vision and our volunteer work, as we get started, is the best thing you can do for us. You will be supporting our dreams and our calling.
For those of you who have taken the time to read this but do not know us personally, please take a look at theremedy.guru to see if you think our endeavor and our mission is something you can get behind. An itemized list of the expenses we are trying to cover is available upon request.
Carol and I are so grateful for all the support we have had in life up to this point from our family, friends and the universe. The Remedy is an expression of our gratitude for those who have helped us along the way.
Please help us on our journey back to Burning Man. Love and Light,
Curtis & Carol
