Thermal Equipment for Future Dog Searches!

Hi everyone, 

My name is Jess Cohan, owner of missing Golden Retriever Freddie (pictured on right).

I am setting up this GoFundMe in the hopes of raising enough funds for a minimum of two pieces of thermal equipment, which I would like to gift to DogLost Cornwall & Drone SAR for Lost Dogs UK. Both are volunteer-led organisations that help reunite thousands of missing dogs with their families every year. This essential thermal equipment will be available (and invaluable!) in future searches for lost animals in Cornwall & Devon.

Our Backstory

It has been 6 weeks now since Freddie went missing off Holywell Beach (North Cornwall), just as Storm Alex began battering the Cornish coast. He is a wonderful young Goldie; bouncy, fun and friends with every person and every dog he ever met. Despite extensive searching, Freddie remains missing and that is incredibly sad. One thing that is not sad though, one thing that has absolutely staggered this family, is the sheer amount of kindness shown to us since Freddie went missing.

The incredible volunteers from DogLost Cornwall & the Drone SAR for Lost Dogs group have been there for us since Day One. They have searched alongside us in the most horrific weather, put up posters, flown drones, and provided unwavering support and advice throughout. It has been a harrowing, unrelenting nightmare since the day Freddie disappeared, but because of Maxine, Tony, the other wonderful volunteers of DogLost & Drone SAR, & all the rest of Freddie's Army, we have never felt alone.

It is difficult to describe how grateful we are, but I hope this fundraiser allows us to give back in some small way. To help DogLost, Drone SAR, and the people of Cornwall for when the next beloved pet goes astray. You have done everything you possibly could for us & Freddie, and we will never forget your kindness.

The Organisations

1)    DogLost Cornwall – DogLost is run almost entirely by volunteers. They help reunite thousands of missing dogs with their owners every year and charge no fees for their services. Maxine Young is the local DogLost coordinator in Cornwall, assisted by admins Geoff Axford, John Dunn & Lysney Green. She works tirelessly on the ground, searching for missing dogs across Cornwall and beyond.

2)    Drone SAR For Lost Dogs UK – an organisation that use drones to help find missing dogs. They rely entirely on volunteer pilots, like Tony Andrews, who give up their time to assist in searches.

The Equipment

1)    Thermal (Infrared) Drone

Thermal imaging drones can improve the chances of finding a missing dog, as the drone can sense the heat being omitted from the animal.

Model: DJ Mavic Enterprise Dual (full fly kit, smart controller, 4 x batteries) £3030

Guardian: Drone SAR will receive the thermal drone, to be available to all local pilots (Cornwall & Devon).

2)    Thermal (Infrared) Scope

As with the thermal drone, thermal scopes can improve chances of finding missing dogs through heat-sensing technology. The Pulsar Axion XQ38 has a detection range of up to 1800m and can also be used in poor weather conditions.

Excess funds

Any funds remaining after the purchase of the thermal equipment will be equally divided between two local animal charities:

A)    Last Chance Hotel – a dog rescue based in Cornwall, who work hard to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abused and neglected dogs and other animals.
